Meet Silas Hunter | Fashion Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Silas Hunter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Silas, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I started Thirteen Los Angeles, I didn’t know what to name it. I called it Quality Control for a second. I then changed to Numbskull but scrapped that idea because it didn’t feel like it was me. As an artist and not just a designer I want everything I create to be the truest extension of myself. The number 13 has been a frequent occurrence in my life. I was born on November 13th, I see it in life a lot, it is my favorite number, as well it ends up in things I create a lot. I thought of Thirteen Los Angeles because it represents everything I am and everything I want to be. I decided to put Los Angeles in the name because it is my hometown and the place that made me who I am today.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets my art apart from others is that mine is a first-person perspective of the way I view life and myself as an artist. I am excited to show the world what I am as an artist and see the progression of my creative expression. Becoming the artist I am today was a long and difficult journey. It made me question for years who I was/am as a person and what the point of my own life is and whether the things I create are true expressions of myself. I learned through the journey that my purpose in life is to express my creativity to whatever degree I feel is best.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
LA is full of mystery and adventure. There are so many amazing things to do and eat in LA its hard to choose. Whenever you are in LA you have to visit places like Venice Beach and Melrose just to get some insight into the LA life. Personally though, my favorite spot in LA is Philippe’s French Dip on Alameda St. It has been there for over a hundred years and is an LA staple. Another good place to go is El Pescador beach. In order to get there you have to walk down a hill, but it is a dope small beach that gets an amazing sunset.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many people who contributed to my love and passion for clothes. Firstly my parents at Via Davia Vintage. They brought me into this world and the fashion industry on the same day. They got me to love fashion, especially shoes, at a very young age. My mentor Zee who owns Seulement Los Angeles played the second biggest role behind my parents. He is the person who taught me how to sew and use different elements of Boro Mending to create the vision I have.
