We had the good fortune of connecting with Anastas Urdanivia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anastas, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Entrepreneurship has always been a huge part of our lives. From a very young age, both of the Shaka Hammox founders have been fascinated with business. From researching popular brands, to keeping up with the trends, to reading about the journeys of many different entrepreneurs, we have loved it.

Entrepreneurship is not something you can learn in a classroom. There are a lot of ups and downs. You hear business owners say this over and over but never quite understand until you are in that situation. This is what makes us excited, the journey and all the lessons that come with it. Being able to create your own hours while growing something you love. It’s really the only way to gain experience, expand your network, and grow. You have to go for it. So that is what we have done. It all started when a group of us friends were watching the sunset while hammocking on Waikiki Beach, on the island of Oahu Hawaii. We knew that hammocks were big part of our days and we wanted to share those experiences. We combined passion with hard work and here we are now, Shaka Hammox Co.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Shaka Hammox Co. is proud to be a veteran owned business. After serving 4 years in the Marine Corps, our co-founder learned quickly that everyday has new challenges. Learning how to overcome adversity and come out on top was one of the biggest lessons that was taught during Whether it was continuously changing timelines, urgent needs of others, or hasty decisions to ensure mission success, these made our co-founder who he is today. Every obstacle and challenge taught him lessons that will forever be useful. Adapting to any situation is what sets Shaka Hammox apart.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A day in the City would absolutely start by setting up a couple Hammox on top of Mount Soledad for sunrise.

Next would be breakfast at Brockton Villa for their famous Coast Toast (Best French Toast in SD).

The rest of the day would be spent going up the coast chasing waves, beach hopping, and eating some Alberto’s Burritos.

Finally, we would set up some hammocks at San Clemente Pier with a couple Micheladas in hand for sunset.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Honestly we think every small business around us deserves a shoutout because now we are experiencing first hand how much work, dedication, time and energy goes into it all. Having an idea is one thing, but making that idea a clear reality with design and product is something completely different. Every empire started as a small business, every brand name around us started with just a few people. Every staple item was thought up by someone. We are honored and grateful to be in this business world now. We admire all of the small businesses around us, especially our competition.
