We had the good fortune of connecting with Britney Jayy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Britney, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
To be honest – the way my mind works, I don’t even think I ever process any thoughts. I usually just think of ideas and in order for them to be removed from my mind I have to bring them to life or act on them. My current businesses “TyNey Eats” and “Ohhifren” were just that. They were two thoughts and ideas that kept replaying in my head and bringing them to life, brought me to life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My creative journey is a rollercoaster. I’m sure other creatives can agree that there are times when things aren’t going as planned and they quit in their heads 3-5 times a month. Or maybe that’s just me, Aside from being a singer/songwriter for myself, I also offer my services to creatives around the world ranging countries like Sweden to Jamaica, with the help of SoundBetter. I believe that working with other individuals from different backgrounds, language barriers, and musical tastes has helped evolve my personal music and work ethic. I think the downfall about working for yourself is knowing what your limits are. There are times where I do overwork myself, in which contributes to my monthly mental quit count lol. I feel that I am getting better at managing my workload and knowing what I can, and can not do.

I want the world to see me as a breath of fresh eucalyptus/ lavender air. I want to bring change to my community and pave a way for the Black women who will come after me. I get told that I am always trying to do too much, but I feel that one day it will all pay off in a humbling way. I want people to see me, and see peace and hope. I want them to know that everything that I am doing from music to mental health awareness, I am doing it for you.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So right now I live in Sacramento, and I’ve been here for 2 years. So far I can attest that it’s been a vibe and anyone who visits me always enjoys themselves. Since I do cook, I would most likely cook for my best friend visiting majority of their stay because well 1. it saves money and 2. I’m tired of hearing her mouth every time she sees me post my food on instagram lol My go-to place right now for a good meal is Fixins. There’s a new location at LA live now, but the OG spot is in Sacramento and it’s always a vibe when I go. After a good meal, I would definitely take them downtown to bar hop. There are a lot of dope bars in Sacramento, and if you play your cards right you might run into a generous bartender who gives you free drinks.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shout out to black women around the world who are working around the clock to better themselves and the people around them. Who put their all into their work and what they love, but don’t get the recognition deserved.
