We had the good fortune of connecting with Bing Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bing, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is – Mentality, I believe as long as a person has the right mentality, they’re able to accomplish anything they want. Everything you want to do starts with your mentality. The mentality is just the main part. There are different parts of the mentality that you need to focus on. One of them is how you think. What’s your thought process? Is it positive, or is it negative? One of my favorite quotes is from Mr. Henry Ford; he said, “If you think you can, you can. If you think you can’t, you can’t. Either way, you’re right”. So what does that mean? Think about it, if you say to yourself, “I want a new phone!” what does your brain begin to do? It starts to say, “I think I can get one.” You’re probably thinking of ways to either make some extra money on the side or, if you can somehow cut out some Starbucks, or date nights, to save some money for a new phone. Now let’s do the opposite. Let’s say you say to yourself, “I don’t have the money, so I can’t get it.” What did that statement do to the way you think? Most likely, your brain just stopped thinking about the new phone. It’s almost like your brain automatically quit. That’s how powerful words are to our brain. We always have to think positively and think that we can. This way, at least our brain is working, and trying to find a way to get it done.

The second part of mentality is commitment. I believe 90% of the businesses that fail is because most business owners go into business with a 9-5 mentality. The majority of the entrepreneurs start off their work-life as an employee. As an employee, your brain is only working and thinking about your job from 9am to 4:58pm. They’re waiting by the door for the last two minutes, ready to leave. I believe 99.99% of the employees don’t think about their jobs after 5pm unless it’s complaining about something or someone at their job. One day they say to themselves, “you know what? I’m going to start my own business.” I am willing to bet that a majority of them still have the same employee mentality, where their brain checks out at 5pm. We as humans, are creatures of habit, making it hard for someone to change the way they’ve been thinking for years., which is why they don’t think about their business after hours. I’ve believed that it’s a big problem. I personally am constantly thinking about my business. Whether it’s about why a client said no to us, how we can market better, how we can serve our clients better, or what new products we can offer. I have a hard time sleeping because I’m constantly thinking about how I can make this business better. If you don’t have this type of commitment, you’re going to fail.

Another part of mentality is the willingness to learn new things. When I was in high school, I thought I would be done with learning after college. Oh boy, was I wrong. I never realized that being a small business owner, you would have to learn pretty much everything about that business. Including but not limited to marketing, accounting, business law, building websites, SEO’s, HR, leadership, managing people, sales, and customer service. Throughout the years, I force myself to read, and learn about all these areas. Before I hand off a task to someone else, I always make sure I, myself, know how to do that task. There’s no way you can lead or help them if you don’t know about that task yourself. Remember, as a business owner, there’s really no one above you that you can go ask for help. You have to be able to find those answers yourself. As a business owner, Google is your best friend.

These are just some small parts of having the right Mentality to be a business owner. I believe having the right mentality help me to become successful. You have to live, and breathe the business. Training yourself to have the right mentality is the most difficult part of the business. The easiest factor behind building a successful business is knowing what your clients want, providing them with the best products, and the best possible customer service.
