We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachael Guillermo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachael, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Do it! Say YES. One thing I have learned through all my experiences in both personal and professional, I have held myself back many times because I was too afraid to take risks and I was too afraid of failure.

Growing up, I was that shy girl, the one who never took initiative or barely even wanted to be the first to say hello. As I grew older and surrounded myself with people who are risk takers (and it’s still a self-battle today) but, I learned to take more risks and learned to accept that failure was a possibility but that it was okay. And I can say, every time I did take a risk whether it was trying something new or changing my career, I never regretted it and it always brought me to something even better!

As a creative, and now business owner, this is probably the most risky move I have made. And I have my fiancé to thank for that, he pushed me the most to always choose what makes me happy. And I have never looked back! Taking risks has surprised me with the potential I didn’t know I had. It opened so many doors for me that I didn’t know were possible. I blossomed into a person I didn’t know was in me. I firmly believe taking risks is the best thing you could for yourself because we only live once and you might as well reach for your full potential and allow yourself to create the life you dream of.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Once I found what I was truly passionate about, I realized I could still fulfill my dream of becoming a business owner and still be a skin/beauty professional. Before opening Aemend Skin, I focused on mastering my craft while fueling my business mindset. After many great mentors and learning experiences, I didn’t know when the right time was going to be (until it just was) to take the leap. It was many mental self battles because I easily fall for imposter syndrome. It took a strong support system to believe in me and for my own strength to believe in myself to be where I am now. And I couldn’t be any more thankful for all the support I have and continue to receive. My family, fiancé, friends, and all my loyal clients keep me going.

Aemend Skin came into fruition in October 2021 and offers advanced skin treatments, makeup, brow artistry, and waxing. When creating my business, one thing I wanted to emphasize on is the client experience. I wanted to focus on their journey, a transformation for themselves. I prioritize each client as if they were my only client. I make an effort to educate. I want my clients to know the what, why, and how of their own skin. I feel that when we’re educated and have a better understanding about something, in general, it makes the process or in this case, the treatment plan easier and more appealing. My goal is to instill hope that no skin is too late so revise and to show others that while I can enhance your appearance on the outside, you will feel great on the inside too.

The name, Aemend, was created from the idea of feeling welcomed, inviting, and gentle. Having a skin condition shouldn’t feel shameful when you are looking for help. Aemend was created from Emend and AE from esthetics. Therefore, combining the two to describe exactly what I do: Using the principles of aesthetics to mend the skin. I invite everyone and anyone to start their skin and beauty transformation with Aemend Skin!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My most favorite thing to do is try brunch spots, be by the beach, and just spend time exploring Balboa Park, Liberty Station, and many other places with our perfect weather.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My fiancé, Cyrus, believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself. He pushed me to find my passion and allowed me to become the real me. As he is also a business owner (@legacycreativeartsstudio), it feels amazing being able to build an empire together.

One of the best mentors, Hannah Lebron (@beautybyhannahlebron), taught me so many things in business, as an Esthetician, and even in my personal life. She saw me for who I am which gave me the freedom to build my career and she helped me feel ready to become a business owner.
