Meet Amrita Khanna | Interior Decorator and Stylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amrita Khanna and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amrita, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”- Steve Jobs.
This quote by Steve Jobs encapsulates how I like to approach interior design, and I believe is reflected in the spaces my clients and I have created together. I enjoy starting the design process by really getting to know my clients, their lifestyle, habits, sense of personal style, how they use their space as all these details inform what we are going to do with the space so it represents who they are.
While I do inject my love for fabrics, colors and patterns into all projects, this is done in complete synergy with my clients choices and preferences making every home unique. We try and ensure that every piece is selected thoughtfully, and purposefully. We also love integrating clients old pieces of art or furniture with their new finds so the homes feel interesting and layered.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Coming from a rich Indian heritage and growing up in Kuwait in the Middle East definately has had an effect on my use of color, pattern and style, which I would describe as eclectic but disciplined. My exposure to art started with watching my talented mother tirelessly create beautiful paintings, effortlessly, one large canvas after another. We were taught from a young age to admire, appreciate and seek out beautiful artists, craftsmen, art forms as my parents were collectors and frequented museums and galleries. I then moved to Hongkong which exposed me to the high end designers, and brands, the lack of space and the necessity to optimize space without compromising on design.
All of these influences have had a big role to play in how I perceive what a space can look like.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Sandiego my favorite places to go to are Balboa park for long walks, or visit the Old town district. We love going for long hikes in Torrey Pines, the weather is always perfect!
Some of my favorite restaurants are The Winery, Tender Greens, True Food Kitchen and Din Tai Fung when I crave some dim sum!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I consider myself very fortunate to have a wonderful and very supportive husband who pushed me to explore and pursue my passion in interior design. He has been instrumental in encouraging me every step of the way. A pillar of support, he gave me the wings to fly while always being there to offer support and advice anytime I have needed it. I have also been very fortunate to work with the most amazing clients who have trusted me unconditionally and since we don’t do any advertising, it’s only the positive feedback, relationships and recommendations from our clients that have helped grow the business
