We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsey Rose and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chelsey, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started working when I was 15 and began with things like ticket booth sales and babysitting, then did a short stint at an office as an accounting assistant and knew right away that I HATED sitting in an office under florescent lights. I left that job and started working in a sports bar then moved to LA and somehow got hired at the Bel Air Hotel haha. I think it was a mix of seeing women there in the middle of the day who were doing computer work then heading to the spa while I stood out in the sun BAKING and dealing with the most high maintenance people that made me feel like I wanted to be in control of my schedule. I started drafting up ideas on sticky notes at the hostess stand and would work backwards to figure out how much I needed to make from blogging and personal training in order to leave my job.
I just knew that I absolutely hated having to ask for time off, being guilt tripped into working 14 hour days, and dealing with people who were just so. damn. rude.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
So I’ve come to learn that the personal training world is like the wild wild west. There’s not really any rules to become a personal trainer aside from maybe getting a certification, but honestly, most people don’t even do that.
With social media, you see a TON, and I mean A TON, of average every day people who have never trained a person in their life who maybe lose some weight and feel like they are now qualified to sell programs to other people on how to do the same.
It’s led to a lot of the fitness industry kind of looking at personal trainers like a joke, which is valid considering the circumstances. It’s also been a HUGE motivating factor for me to get as educated as possible when it comes to training so that when clients meet with me or buy one of my online programs, they can see the difference in quality, attention to detail, education, and overall results as compared to the many other programs out there.
Also when I graduated high school, I started going to a community college because I thought that I wanted to be a psychologist. I love trying to understand why people do what they do and just being able to bring a new outlook to people. I never thought of training as therapy but when you think about it, I’m seeing these girls one on one for a few hours every week and we end up working through all sorts of issues which I find rewarding.

I started training girls online when I was working at the Bel Air hotel and really just stuck with is as much as I could. I started getting a few in person clients but honestly, I didn’t really know what I was doing. I only knew how I trained myself so that’s how I started training other people.
Once I started the Show Up Fitness Internship, my outlook changed and I was humbled by how much there is to learn. It’s truly ENDLESS.
At this point I was working at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and had about 3 clients at the Show Up Gym. I was working until 1-2am, training at 6:00am, going to the internship from 7-11am, working out, then would go home and try to work on my blog until I had to be back at the hotel by 5:00pm.
I was DYING and was really just trying to save up enough money to quit the hotel and move to training full time.
Was I scared?
Honestly – not really.
I knew I could do it and I knew that if all else failed, there’s 9000 other hotels I could go work at in LA. I just knew I needed to dedicate all my time to training so that’s what I did!
I became one of the top trainers at the gym by 2019 and then was hit in 2020 with the “non essential business” tag from covid and was forced to leave.
THAT was scary, but it allowed me to focus on online training thankfully which turned out to be an extremely valuable time to understand how to create personalized programs from people.

I continued to train people in parks for all of 2020 and then by mid 2021, I had a full book of business!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First of all, i’m a homebody so my itinerary isn’t for the bachelorette girls, get away vibe haha BUT if someone wants to just chill and enjoy the city like me for a week – here’s what we’d do.

(I grew up in SD but I currently live in LA so if we we’re in LA, i’d say:)

– always get coffee from Pete’s first thing every morning.
– slip away to a hotel lobby for a few hours to get computer work done – I love the fairmont in Santa Monica, the Proper in downtown, and the 1 Hotel in West Hollywood.
– After that I’d say we go grab lunch and a drink on the rooftop (proper and 1 hotel) or by the pool at the Fairmont.
– We would have to spend one morning going towards Zuma Beach to do a 1 hour hike that I LOVE over there which we conclude with a stop at the neighborhood farmers market for a croissant.
– Definitely would need to go to either the Melrose Trading post or the Rosebowl Flee Market (Melrose is every Sunday, Rosebowl is every third Sunday).
– We’d have to spend an afternoon walking down ventura in the valley because the valley is a goldmine that people love to hate. Honestly if less people want to be in the valley, that’s fine by me lol. There’s amazing restaurants, salons, shopping and coffee.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Ah yes. My shoutout goes to Chris at Show Up Fitness for educating me on how to be a successful personal trainer, and to my fiancé, who met Chris and talked me into trying the Show Up Fitness Internship.
