We had the good fortune of connecting with Steph Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steph, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Love this question! I’ve always called myself a “calculated risk taker”. I believe that some of the best things come when getting outside your comfort zone, which can feel hard when it’s happening. Keeping the reward in mind always helps, but knowing you can always pivot or reverse a decision makes it feel less scary for me!

When I originally quit my job to pursue my business full time, it was a risk but I put some buffer in place. I saved up enough money for a few months of living expenses so that I didn’t feel the financial pressure of going without a consistent paycheck. I also knew that the worst case scenario was finding a new job.

I like to try things out before I commit to them fully which helps ease into the risk! I have worked on each of my businesses part time before taking them full time. I spent a few months in San Diego before I sold my home to move there more permanently. And right now I’m in Mexico exploring what remote work life abroad feels like : )

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Being true to myself is what sets me apart from others – both in my design work and duties as a business owner. It wasn’t easy to get to that point, but it’s a process to find where you belong in this crazy world!

I can’t even begin to break down all the lessons I’ve learned along the way, I think I learn something new every day, which is part of why I love what I do! Some highlights – trust yourself, do things your way, take a break, drink your water!

I want the world to know that if I can do it, anyone can. That sounds cheesy, but it’s so true. Starting, running, and growing a business is my greatest adventure, something that I hope everyone can experience!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Welcome to San Diego!

For exploring and views – La Jolla Torrey Pines and Mt Soledad, Pacific Beach pier, Cabrillo Monument in Point Loma, Sunset Cliffs (you must catch a sunset here, the best!), Dog Beach OB (the happiest place on Earth!)

For food – Ketch in Point Loma is our favorite for a nice dinner, smoothies from Northside Shack (they close at 3, so get there early!), anything is Little Italy is amazing and a great place to spend an evening, Newbreak Cafe in OB is a local spot with amazing breakfast and lunch

*Our FAVORITE thing to do on a Saturday morning: get hashbrown breakfast burritos from Cojitas on Voltaire and take them down to eat at Sunset Cliffs or on the beach in OB!

For drinks – Juneshine in North Park for boozy kombucha, Kilowatt Brewery in OB for yummy beer and the most fun/unique games, Epic Brewery in Point Loma for relaxing with a view

We love riding bikes by the water through Liberty Station area, so many fun things to explore!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely have to give a shoutout to everyone who trusted me enough to make their wedding invitations back when I was starting out. Looking back on the designs, it wasn’t my best work so I’m super thankful for those who allowed me to create for them.

It might be cliche, but the book You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero was a game changer for me. I read it in 2017, so after I’d already been a full time business owner, but it was the start of my understanding of self development and growth. Since then, I’ve gone deeper into mindset, development, and even spirituality which has been a foundational pillar to my success.

My coach, Carley Zuercher, has been an amazing mentor over the last year. She provides encouragement, but also challenges me in all the right ways.

I’m so incredibly thankful to each person who purchased from me, follows my businesses, shares my content, and even likes a post. It means the world to me to have your support!
