We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Nurding and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chris, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
As our name says, IT’S NEVER 2L8 to make it happen! If you truly want something bad enough, stay with it! Don’t EVER give up!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Following four years of military service in the United States Navy, I began my 30 year career with the FAA as an Air Traffic Controller working radar arrivals in and out of San Francisco, Oakland, Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Upon retiring from the FAA in 2012, I decided to try and play a musical instrument and subsequently took bass guitar and voice lessons. As a retiree, I found that I now had time to learn and practice. No excuses! I had always dreamed, as do so many others, of being a performer, so I decided to pursue that dream! Well, one thing led to another, and I eventually found myself up onstage, performing live! I was hooked from that moment on, and have been playing professionally for almost 5 years now; the last 3 1/2 with IT’S NEVER 2L8!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Since I am a longtime Coronado resident, and also spent much of my youth there, I have always been partial to the iconic Hotel Del Coronado, as well as the many shops, restaurants, and watering holes around the village. Also, being a huge baseball fan as well as a longtime San Diego Padres season ticket holder, I always recommend that visitors try and catch a game or two at lovely Petco Park! Even if you aren’t a baseball fan, heading across the bay by foot ferry, grabbing a bite to eat in the Gaslamp, and taking in a ballgame on a perfect San Diego summer night is truly a memorable experience for most!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My bandmates Deanna Haala, David Lane, and Alan Neff, have overcome my constant scheduling, badgering, whining, and crazy notions and idiosyncrasies, to help us all form and maintain a very successful San Diego area cover band, in a very tough market! And also a shoutout to my wife and “band mom” Stephanie, who holds things together financially, while also keeping her husband under control and focused on the job at hand!
