We had the good fortune of connecting with Torie Borrelli Hall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Torie, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Miscarriage is fairly common, but rarely shared. Anytime a woman becomes pregnant, her whole world shifts. Whether classified scientifically as an embryo, blastocyst or fetus, this small babe has likely shifted your life in every way. The moment we find ourselves pregnant, our hearts, bodies, minds and souls begin to expand. Our thoughts and imaginations run free, we begin to see this new life, see ourselves and our partners differently. Our current path starts to shift, as we plan for our new future. Oftentimes we envision it all, our baby, ourselves as mothers, our partners as parents, our parents as grandparents. When we are met with miscarriage we are met with all this loss. The loss of a life, not only the life of a baby, but the loss of our lives with this baby. It is important to give intention and mourn your loss. traditionally postpartum, we want mothers to rest. Unfortunately, because we are advised to not share our pregnancy until we are past the 1st trimester, many women mourn this loss and suffer in silence. It fills us with sadness, guilt and shame. You are not alone most women experience miscarriage, anywhere from 10-25% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. That is why we created “Box For Loss” a box designed specifically to provide miscarriage and pregnancy loss support. After experiencing the pain and isolation of our own miscarriage experiences, I partnered with architect Bryn Young and with the midwives at Tourmaline Birth and Wellness Collective to create a support box designed specifically to nurture mothers and families going through the loss of a pregnancy; in body, heart, and spirit.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
There is so much support for pregnancy and the fourth trimester, but not much for miscarriage. As an integrative functional nutritionist I have devoted my life to helping those with chronic issues reach optimal health through nutrient-dense foods paired with a non-toxic lifestyle. I am intimately familiar with the magic of supporting others through painful journeys of healing and transformation. I have helped so many women get pregnant who were told they would never. I worked on my fertility, hormones, thyroid and detox pathways for a year and then suffered a traumatic miscarriage at 14 weeks. It was the hardest thing I have ever gone through. I felt alone, scared, sad, and pain. I overcame this with creating Box for Loss and by sharing my story. With the majority of miscarriages occurring before 12 weeks, most go unsupported. Box for Loss was created to fill this gap, and expand the space for families going through pregnancy loss with resources, support, and reflection. The main thing I learned is we need to support eachother, be empowered, nourish our bodies, and never give up.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would start with a surf on my husbands beautiful boards (Josh Hall Surfboards, selfless plug), followed by breakfast at Little Lion Cafe run by my good friends, and badass women. If it is a weekend we would hit up the farmers market for a snack or to stock up on goodies to cook some San Diego Mexican inspired favorites of my cookbook. I get my meat from Cook Pigs who does local deliveries and I love the seafood from the Saraspe’s who fish right off where we surf. Happy hour at our wine club, Vino Carta (so many good organic and sustainable options). We dont eat out often because we love cooking with all the local goods San Diego has to offer, but some of my favorite restaurants are Soichi sushi, Kettner Exchange, Campfire, Fish 101, Wayfarer (sourdough bread), The Fishery, and Ceaserina.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Box for Loss was created by women to help other women feel more empowered and not so alone. I couldn’t not have done it without the help and support from Bryn Young (www.byoungdesign.com) and the Midwives at Tourmaline Collective Birthing Center (https://www.tourmalinecollective.com), both in San Diego.
