We had the good fortune of connecting with Cody Yarbro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cody, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
Inspiration for me tends to reflect my real-life day-to-day experiences. So much of the content of my books has come from anecdotes of my personal life. From memories in my childhood to things that happened as I am writing this right now. One of my favorite singers says, “Life imitates art”. I could not agree more.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an Author and LGBTQIA+ lifestyle blogger. In 2018 I was nominated for a Nicky Award in Hillcrest for my writing. I feel there is not enough queer representation in the industry. I have always been known to say things that most people are too afraid to vocalize. I do not mind playing with the controversial side of things…I am always open-minded with discussions and am open to opposing opinions. I feel what sets my books apart specifically, is that there is truly something for every type of person. And the story has so many different aspects to it that you can get the violence, the love story, the adventure and the mystery…I think what sets me apart from other people in the industry is my ability to see past the boxes and deny societal “norms”.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh this is fun for sure there are sooo many places in San Diego that are amazing. First, we would get off the plane and make sure and see the San Diego skyline, you have to see it on a clear day. Second, we need some Mexican food. You will not find better Mexican food outside of San Diego, unless you are in Mexico. Next, we grab a night cap at a fun dive bar in either Hillcrest or Golden Hill. We would then have brunch either at Harley Gray, MO’s or Wunderland right on the beach. Of course, brunch comes with mimosas…we would spend the day exploring the beach towns and eventually stop for sushi at Sushi Deli in Hillcrest. When done, we would head back and rest up before heading out for the night on the town. The coolest part of Hillcrest is University Ave; You could spend an entire afternoon just exploring the avenues and hopping around the unique boutiques, restaurants and bars. Before they leave we would need to see Old Town and La Jolla. So that would be our next day…having some margaritas and fresh chips and salsa…then finish the day off at the shores. One of the days would also be spent exploring Coronado, having oysters at lunch and finishing with a mud pie before catching the ferry downtown.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Honestly, I want to send a shoutout to all of the people that kept checking up on me during the pandemic. Covid-19 was a disaster that none of us could have ever anticipated. But it drove so many of us to a dark place mentally. The stress financially, emotionally and physically were more than we were prepared to handle. During the crazy, I think the only thing that was truly united were my friendships. We had virtual happy hours, daily conversations and when things calmed down we have socially distanced gatherings. Even just a simple text or call could turn around an entire day. So this shoutout has to go to my family and friends. Our nation has never been more divided…so having people to rely on was super helpful. And I love them so much.
