Meet Manuela Lendoyro | Figurative Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Manuela Lendoyro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Manuela, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
I have a favorite anecdote I once heard about Pablo Picasso, in which he was doodling on a napkin in a cafe. As he was leaving, and about to throw the drawing away, a lady, who had been watching him the whole time, asked if she could keep the napkin instead. He then replied, sure that will be $10,000. Stunned, the lady asked how that was possible since it only took him 5 minutes to complete. To which he answered, no ma’am, it took me over 50 years to draw this in 5 minutes. I love this story because it is a perfect example of how success it’s not achieved overnight. It’s also gets me thinking about how to value and give merit to all the hard work it takes to create something. Creative individuals sometimes get caught up with the urge, and the personal pleasure that it gives us, to make something; that we forget about hundreds and thousands of hours, and the innumerable mistakes, that it took to get us to where we are now.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a figurative painter. I’ve always been intrigued by the human form, and what it represents; our facial expressions and our relationship with others and even with ourselves. Art it’s like a language for me. Ever since I was little, it has been my way to meditate and get “in the zone”. I want to know what makes us unique and how we express it as individuals. Usually what lies on the surface is a reflection of what we carry inside; our sense of self-identity. Art is, and always will be, a part of me, and I would be fortunate enough to continue doing it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Every time I get any visitors, we soon enough end up at Ironside for their mouth-watering Lobster Roll. If it starts getting dark, then I’d walk on down to False Idol for some cocktails. The next day’s breakfast would have to be either Caroline’s Seaside Cafe for their awesome views, or Second Nature for a vegetarian brunch. San Diego has so many great food options, from Oscar’s fish tacos, to a delicious slice of pizza from Ambrogio 15, or my favorite pasta at Parma in Hillcrest. There’s also some crazy good ramen at Menya Ultra, and for the most authentic Thai food try The Original Sab-E-Lee, but be sure to stop by Rose Donuts for an all hours of the day indulgence. Although a bit out of the way, California Sushi in Chula Vista is my go-to for the best sushi rolls in town. The OB farmer’s market is a must visit, I love the vibe, the music, the people… I really enjoy biking or skating the MB/PB boardwalk, spending time with the neighbors, and waving at Slomo as he cruises on by. Sometimes I like to catch the sunset at El Prez with friends and drinks, or if in a different mood some yoga at Palisades Park, overlooking the waves. A visit to Encinitas or a hike around Torrey Pines and Sunset Cliffs is also a great way to soak-in the sun. And if all were fine and dandy, then I’d definitely recommend one of almost daily concerts that The Casbah use to offer.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my family and friends for their support. The friends that have become muses to my art. Friends that have always shown their support for my work and are constantly encouraging to keep going. To all my artist friends whose were always willing to lend a hand.
