We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Nguyen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
The saying “with great risk often comes great reward” definitely holds true for me. I gave up a job in the casino industry that I had 12+ years experience in to start a business doing Permanent Makeup, an industry I knew nothing about. I just knew I wanted to work for myself. I took 2 courses at first and did a lot of research online on how to open up a business. I knew little about social media advertising and didn’t even know how to get clients or reach the right audience. I opened my business anyway. It took months of hard work but I was finally getting recognized. I started with zero clientele to now being booked out months in advance. I have clients and students from all over the US.. and even some from out of the country. I get to set my own hours and spend more time with my sons. I’m there for every milestone in their life and that is my reward.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a Permanent Makeup Artist and Educator. I specialize in Ombré Brows, Microshading and Lip Blush. I also teach courses that are mostly private 1 on 1 trainings. I think one thing that sets me apart from others is that I am very sociable and down to earth. I respect everyone in the industry and block out any negative energy. In this industry, we all learn from each other. Eveyone has a unique style and something different to offer. I have built good friendships with a lot of amazing artists and clients as well. The key is to remain humble and remember why I started. I love that I can empower women in so many ways.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There is so much to do in San Diego and I have yet to explore all the hidden gems! The beaches are fun during summertime. Downtown and North Park are fun for bar hopping and they also have good food. Since I’m Vietnamese, I’m always craving pho or anything that has noodles (of course). Carne asada fries are to die for and a must try in San Diego. Casinos are fun if you’re winning!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be where I am today without the support of my family, friends, clients and everyone in the PMU industry. I’m so thankful for the love and feel so blessed to have so many wonderful people in my life. To my sons: Thank you for allowing me to spoil you. I love the time we get to spend together.. clothes shopping.. toy shopping.. car shopping. My favorite is dinner time when everyone is on their phone or tablet. I love when we FaceTime and you have me on pause! Or when you text me only when you want something. You boys are the reason I love to work so hard. Just kidding, I love you both and wouldn’t have it any other way.
