Meet Katia & Helga | HNK Design CEO

We had the good fortune of connecting with Katia & Helga and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katia & Helga, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe the most important factor behind our success has been genuinely caring about our clients and their homes. Design is important, but people are at the center of everything we do.
From the beginning, we focused on building relationships, listening carefully, and creating spaces that truly reflect how our clients live and what they love. We treat every project as if it were our own home, and we are very involved throughout the entire process, from the first meeting to the final installation.
We also think consistency, hard work, and attention to detail have played a big role. We are not trying to follow every trend. Instead, we focus on creating timeless, functional spaces that our clients will enjoy for many years.
Most of our growth has come through referrals and repeat clients, and to me, that is the biggest sign that we are doing something right.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
HNK Design started from a shared dream between two designers who were passionate about creating beautiful, functional spaces and helping people love where they live. What began as a vision has grown into a business that we are incredibly proud of.
I think what sets us apart is that we genuinely care. We are very hands-on and involved in every project, and we treat our clients’ homes as if they were our own. We don’t just focus on creating a beautiful end result—we focus on the entire experience. Remodeling and building can be overwhelming, and we work hard to make the process feel organized, enjoyable, and well-managed from start to finish.
Our clients often tell us that they appreciate not only our professionalism and attention to detail, but also our personalities. We are approachable, responsive, and easy to work with. We listen, communicate openly, and truly enjoy getting to know the people behind each project. Many of our clients come back to us for additional projects or refer us to family and friends, which is one of the things we are most proud of.
The journey to where we are today certainly wasn’t always easy. Like any small business, there have been challenges, long hours, difficult decisions, and a lot of learning along the way. But every challenge helped us become stronger, more efficient, and more confident in who we are as a company.
One of the biggest strengths of HNK Design is our partnership. Successful partnerships can be difficult to find and even more difficult to maintain, but in our case it has been one of the greatest blessings of our business. We both come from design backgrounds and bring different strengths to the table. Between design, space planning, construction drawings, materials, and project management, we are able to collaborate, challenge each other creatively, and provide a level of service that would be difficult to achieve alone.
Having two designers fully invested in every project creates a true powerhouse approach. There is always another set of experienced eyes reviewing plans, brainstorming solutions, and making sure every detail is considered. Our clients benefit from that collaboration every step of the way.
The biggest lesson we have learned is that success is built on consistency, hard work, integrity, and relationships. There are no shortcuts. You earn trust by showing up, doing what you say you will do, and always putting your clients’ best interests first.
What we want people to know about HNK Design is that we are a relationship-driven company. We love design, but what motivates us most is helping people transform their homes and improve the way they live. We are passionate about creating timeless spaces that are both beautiful and functional, and we feel incredibly grateful to do this work every day.
At the heart of it all, HNK Design is built on trust, partnership, creativity, and a genuine commitment to our clients. We believe that is what has made our journey so rewarding and what continues to drive our success.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is a hard question because San Diego is so beautiful and diverse. There are so many amazing places depending on what you enjoy, but if I had to choose, I would definitely build the trip around the coastline.
The beaches are my favorite places to be. I never get tired of the ocean views, the coastal towns, and especially the sunsets. To be honest, San Diego has some of the most beautiful sunsets and skies I have ever seen. There is something magical about watching the sun disappear into the Pacific while the sky turns shades of pink, orange, and purple.
If my best friend were visiting for a week, we would spend a lot of time exploring the coast. We would start in Coronado, walk the beach, and enjoy a sunset dinner overlooking the water. We would spend a day in La Jolla, watching the sea lions, walking along the coastline, and stopping at local cafés and shops. We would also visit Del Mar, Encinitas, and Carlsbad, each with its own unique personality and charm.
Of course, I would take them to Balboa Park, which I think is one of the most beautiful places in San Diego. Between the architecture, gardens, museums, and cultural events, there is always something to see. We would also spend time in Little Italy, one of my favorite neighborhoods for walking, people-watching, and enjoying great food.
As a designer, I also love showing visitors some of San Diego’s incredible architecture, boutique hotels, restaurants, and local businesses. There is so much creativity and talent throughout the city, and I find inspiration everywhere.
But if I’m being honest, some of my favorite moments would probably be the simplest ones, grabbing coffee in the morning, taking a walk along the coast, and ending the day watching the sunset. Those are the moments that remind me how lucky I am to live here and why I fell in love with San Diego in the first place.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
One person who has had a significant impact on our business is LuAnn Nigara. We have been following her podcast for years, and her advice helped us build the foundation of our business. She has a way of breaking down both the creative and business sides of interior design in a practical and inspiring way, and many of the systems and principles we use today were influenced by what we learned from her.
I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention my business partner, Helga. HNK Design would not be what it is today without her. Building a business is never a solo journey, and I am incredibly grateful to have someone who shares the same values, work ethic, and commitment to our clients. We built this company together with intention, hard work, and a shared vision of creating beautiful spaces while providing an exceptional client experience.
At the end of the day, our success comes down to relationships—relationships with our clients, our trade partners, and with each other. We truly love what we do, and I think people can feel that throughout the entire process.
