Meet Christine Young

We had the good fortune of connecting with Christine Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christine, what principle do you value most?
Compassion and kindness are my guiding principles. People and puppies thrive when they feel safe and supported, especially in the early, messy stages of learning. My goal is to help families raise confident dogs. I want clients to feel empowered, not judged, as they navigate the biting phase, potty accidents, and big adolescent emotions.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Before I became a dog trainer, I was and artist focused on painting and photography. I’ve always loved noticing the little details and capturing the essence of whatever (or whoever) I’m framing. Now, as I coach people through the roller coaster of raising a puppy, many are exhausted, overwhelmed, and wondering if they made a mistake.
Beyond the training, I love finding creative ways to bring some lightness into the process. Corralling everyone for a sweet family photo with their tiny, adorable chaos gremlin can help them get through another week of sleepless nights and chewed-up shoes.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When friends come to town, I like to keep things laid-back and outdoorsy. A hike at Torrey Pines is a favorite, or if they prefer, we’ll find a dog-friendly trail like Batiquitos Lagoon or something scenic in Elfin Forest. Sunset dinners on the beach are always a hit. The rest of the trip is usually a mix of whatever lights people up:
Brunch at Claire’s on Cedros
A little thrift store adventure to Orphaned Objects
A wander downtown for some people-watching, art, or live music
The couch time at home with a cup of tea or cocktail after each adventure is my personal favorite.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m grateful to so many colleagues in the dog training and behavior world. I’m constantly learning from others. Together, we brainstorm about cases and challenge each other to grow. They are generous, thoughtful, & talented. Their support and friendship is one of the best parts of my work. I wouldn’t be the trainer I am without them.
