We had the good fortune of connecting with Huimin (like we mean business) Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Huimin (like we mean business), what role has risk played in your life or career?
The short answer is “life is short. Go for it!”
I come from a very traditional Asian family. As a woman, taking risks was not encouraged. I was expected to follow a plan within the constraints of my culture and society. But then my parents moved us to Mexico! That was a whole different world and you know my Latina sisters are not afraid of a little risk (insert Latina wink). By the time I moved to the US, I was a fusion of different cultures. That included their hopes and dreams. I learned that great things always come with risks. So, I go for it! That promotion. That career change in my mid 30’s. That new hobby. That hot guy! (He’s my bf now). Life is a one time ride and I plan on making mine count.
What should our readers know about your business?
As a single mom to two boys, I tried climbing the corporate ladder to make ends meet. I had a fair amount of success, but my heart was never content. I was scared to leave the familiar and take a big risk . My imposter syndrome was having a party in my head. And that’s the biggest challenge for me. Believing in myself enough to take action. Luckily, I was given a second chance to chase my true dream of becoming a photographer. So I went for it!
I think what sets Lotus Bloom Photography apart is its intent. I wholeheartedly want to find out what the needs of my clients are: beyond the photos, sunsets and props. Maybe capturing these memories are extremely important to you because you want to leave a legacy. A piece of you that can be shared long after you’re gone.
I recently did a photoshoot for a very lovely family because the father is ill and they know that he won’t look the same after all the treatments. So the family wanted to make memories with him as he is now. I was so honored and proud to be able to provide such an important service to them. That’s truly the best part of all this.
I know taking risks is not the easiest thing to do. But if I’ve learned anything so far in life, It is that the idea of standing still in a mildly content life or worse, an unhappy life, forever, is far scarier than forging forward. That’s what Lotus Bloom Photography means to me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a self proclaimed foodie, you know we’re going to be surrounded by the best foods and drinks at all times. We would start our mornings with a cup of coffee or tea in my garden. Then for brunch (because you know we slept in) we would go to Jasmine Seafood restaurant to have dim-sum or Tacos el Poblano on H St. for the best birria in San Diego. I love hanging around China town because it has all my favorite things. Boba, Korean BBQ, Daiso! Of course, if you’re visiting San Diego you must visit the beach. We would go sailing and then go to dinner at Ham’s Lighthouse. I found that if you sit at the bar, you’re almost always guaranteed great company and conversations. Many times with live aboard folks who are super nice. Somewhere in there I would try to squeeze in a trip to Rosarito. We’re so lucky to have Tijuana just 20 minutes away! After running around so much, we would definitely need a spa day at Yu Spa to end the week.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To my mom. Whom I have come to understand and love ever so deeply since I’ve become a mother myself. Thank you for everything that you have shown me. But also thank you for the tears you swallowed. The pain you hid. The white lies. The unconditional love. Without your sacrifice and perseverance, we would not be the wonderfully complex humans that we are. Thanks for never giving up. Thank you for never forsaking us. I will always pull strength from your story and love.
