We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Hebets and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brian, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
It was the only career path I’ve ever felt deeply connected to. I’ve always wanted to explore the unknown lands of the art world and carve out my own path. I was driven to take my talents and build a brand/ foundation that allows me to create things for the world to enjoy. Big murals, big paintings and nothing but badass products. Overcoming obstacles in pursuit of finding your space is always worth the fight. It’s what fuels the creative engine to never quit. My Grandmother, a Fine Artist and my first teacher, used to tell me all the time growing up to chase my dreams because “What if it’s bigger than you can imagine?” Another driving factor was that I didn’t want to look back later in life and regret not ever taking that leap. Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will. Stay grounded and keep powering through challenges. Never know what rewards lie ahead.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I find inspiration in the most unexpected places, and a significant part of my creative process revolves around the unique blend of influences that have shaped my work. What sets my art apart is the fusion of my fascination with the movie “JAWS,” my love for marine life and obsession with movie monsters and cover art. Marine life, with its intricate beauty and diversity, has always served as a constant muse. The vibrant colors, landscapes and mysterious allure of underwater ecosystems find their way into my art. The journey to where I am today professionally has been anything but easy. The Art world will toughen you up. It’s highly competitive with no guarantees. Sink or swim. Gotta stay resilient and determined to navigate the unpredictable currents of the art world. You improvise, you overcome, you adapt -Clint Eastwood. The goal is to make an impact and drive my art around the globe. Beyond the murals, my brand Hebets Arts extends its reach into various mediums, including apparel, toys, and games. At the end of the day, I just wanted to create badass art for people to enjoy. The one thing I can say I’m most proud of, It took me a decade, is taking that leap of faith. To anyone out there who’s debating or doubting themselves on taking their leap, I say go for it. Never know, it could be bigger than you imagined.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ah Yes, I’m a big foodie! My wife and I have been exploring spots for years and have found some great gems. You’re definitely going to need a good ol’ itinerary to cover ground. To lead off breakfast, we go to– Spill the beans or Sunny Boy biscuit. For that first day drink, anywhere close to the water. It’s San Diego, we take pride in our brisk ocean views. Breweries and bars are abundant like taco shops so you can’t miss wherever you go. For Lunch, we can go hard in the paint. If you’re craving San Diego’s best wings, It’s a toss up between Royal Mandarin’s salt and pepper wings or O.B. Noodle house’s garlic wings. It’s a win-win either way. Oh you want to find that best burger? Say no more, I got you. We’re hitting up local legends like Hodads, Rocky’s, The Waterfront for sliders, The friendly for smash burgers or good ol’ In N Out because you don’t have one in your state. No, you want taco shops? That’s tough to narrow down because they’re so plentiful but Cuatros las milpas and Tacos el gordo are a couple to knock off the bucket list. Doesn’t matter what county you’re having fun in, getting drinks and good food are found on every block. Places that are a must to visit would be the Beaches, Old Town, Balboa Park, Sunset cliffs or taking a day trip across the border. I’d want your experience to drive you to want to come back… and play repeat!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s no question that these people deserve every bit of recognition for my career and accomplishments. It starts with my inner circle, My wife Janae, my parents and family. The love and support alone has kept me driven to power through all the ups and downs that come with starting your own business. Without them I could have tapped out a long time ago…yet here I am. Second, are the artists I worked and studied tirelessly alongside for decades perfecting our craft. Special thanks to SUMO. A local artist and a key component of my development. Hands down just did everything better. He introduced me to spray paint, color theory and techniques that forever helped elevate my game. Other artists that deserve a shoutout are the ones that inspired me growing up, Bob Ross, H.R. Giger, Wyland, Joe Jusko and Todd McFarlane. They’re the reason I picked up a pencil and sketchbook as a kid.
