Meet Capri Maddox | Founding Executive Director and General Manager of the City of Los Angeles Civil + Human Rights and Equity (LA Civil Rights) Department

We had the good fortune of connecting with Capri Maddox and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Capri, what do you want your legacy to be?
I want people to remember that I used my voice and my talents to uplift underrepresented communities.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others is my childhood resilience, which makes me a resourceful public servant. I receive support in the following ways:
Strong and supportive church community (mad love for First AME Church LA)
Loving and understanding family
Team members who are all in for a good cause
Unbeatable work ethic with a heart to serve
I promise you, it wasn’t easy, but it was worth it! I overcame challenges through faith, favor,
and always showing up to make a difference (nights, weekends, holidays).
I learned that you have to be intentional about doing all you can while you can.
I want people to know that people invested in Capri and Capri made a difference.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First of all, I like to eat. So, I’d take my best friend to Dulan’s on Crenshaw, Hilltop Cafe in Inglewood, and Breakfast Republic in Culver City. We would ride bikes in CicLAvia, then head to the beach. I’d chauffeur her around while listening to KBLA 1580 AM and LAist 98.3 FM and we’d go to our local farmers market in Larchmont Village, get our nails done, get a massage, attend a local college event, like a USC football or basketball game, and I’d take her to see other friends, family members, and iconic LA landmarks, like the Hollywood sign and Walk of Fame.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my husband of 21 years, Kerman Maddox, and our son. I’d also like to give credit and thanks to all the family and non-family relatives who stepped up to provide nurturing, safe living spaces for me, including Cheryl Turk-Reid, the Winters Family of Culver City, my parents, and my amazing grandmothers.
I’d like to give a big shoutout to the academic leaders who taught me, like my beloved Pepperdine School of Law, Cal State LA, and Fairfax High School teachers, including Dr. Victor and Catherine Head-Kirkley. I also want to shoutout the Capri Law Fund Donors, who invested in my life, including early supporters like Angela Kirkwood, Jamesetta Adams, Keita Ward, Beverly Devereaux, and Kory Smith.
