Meet AC Slamet | Reality Television Producer turned Data Analyst living in Los Angeles

We had the good fortune of connecting with AC Slamet and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi AC, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success has been my willingness to pivot to achieve my primary marker of true success: work-life balance. Working in TV, I quickly learned that there was no such thing within that industry. Instead, there were a lot of 12 hour days, and working weekends and holidays. When the pandemic hit, my mindset started to dramatically change and my goal became to work to live, not to live to work. That is when I decided to take the steps to make the change to work as a Data Analyst.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart is that I have experienced multiple careers now, so I think I bring a fresh perspective to my work. Sometimes I will even surprise myself because I will notice things that my team doesn’t see, since most of my peers come from a data-driven, coding world and approach things differently than I do. During my seven years as a producer, I always knew there was going to come a time where I was going to transition out of the field. I had co-workers who were executive producers and showrunners, who were very successful but would never see their kids or be around for life events. I could feel myself starting to relate because I had missed some birthdays here and there. When I met my partner and I thought we might want to start a family one day, I felt it was time to make the transition.
I started researching what jobs are high in demand but have a low barrier to entry to get into. A lot had to do with data. And so that’s when I started to find these data analysts influencers, who made me think I could do this. So once I wrapped my last show, I purposefully and immediately took some time off to complete TripleTen’s bootcamp.
My journey wasn’t always easy. When I needed motivation to power through my studies at TripleTen, I would think of the light at the end of the tunnel, visualizing my future work-from-home job where I would have more time to spend with my partner and our dogs.
What I want people to take away from my story is that it’s never too late to transition careers. No job is the end all be all. You can basically do almost anything. If you don’t like your current situation, you can always change it. I take comfort in that. I would encourage people not to be scared to make the leap. As long as you have motivation, you can find a way.
In a way, where I am now reminds me of being a Production Assistant when I was first starting out in TV Production. I am making mistakes, correcting myself, and working hard to learn from peers. But this time around, I don’t beat myself up for making mistakes, because I have the perspective of my former career.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Since I am a foodie, I would definitely take them to the San Gabriel Valley where there are a lot of incredible, diverse foods, including great spots for dim sum and Indonesian food (a favorite, since I am from Indonesia). It’s always fun to take people to the classic Hollywood spots, like Rodeo Drive. For cultural LA spots I would recommend The Broad and LACMA. I am also a Disney adult – I love Disneyland and would continue the food tour at the parks! I especially love Star Wars land and love Rise of the Resistance and Oga’s Cantina. I might have them spend the whole week there to be honest!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely want to shout out TripleTen, whose online Data Analytics* bootcamp is the reason that I am where I am today. TripleTen gave me all the tools I needed to make my career change, providing me not only the knowledge and soft skills necessary, but helping to shape my brain to become more curious and analytical. I loved the option to do an extensive program in a short period of time, since I needed to make my transition quickly and get a job right away. Their career coaches and opportunities to work on real business projects via their externship program helped prepare me to accomplish my goal. Additionally, I would love to shout out Alex the Analyst and Luke Barousse, content creators who shared their journeys pivoting into the tech industry. Hearing their stories helped me gain confidence that if they could do it, then I hopefully could too. Lastly, I want to note that I was fortunate enough to have a very supportive partner all along my journey. Without her emotional support, and at times financial support, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
