Meet Lady Blanca | Drag Queen, Performer, Producer, Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lady Blanca and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lady, what inspires you?
I am inspired by life. I am inspired by death.
I am inspired by everything around and inside of me.
My fear of death fuels my desire to stay alive and to continue pushing my art. Everyday is a new opportunity to be and feel inspired. I’d say that on a deeper level, my connections with my family and friends really keep me grounded and help me grasp onto new experiences which I then turn into moments of pure artistry.
My mom, to be exact, has inspired me in shaping my persona, a strong independent Latina woman that has unfortunately been through many life-changing events that never really seem to stop her. Looking up at women, such as Lady Gaga, Selena Quintanilla, Maria Felix, amongst many others, has really helped me develop the type of person and character I’ve always longed to become. From the past, from my present, and from the future – women, I’m inspired by all of them, the lives they’ve lived and that which they will live.
Much of my life has been surrounded by death. From dust we came and dust we shall become. And much dust have I seen come and go. I used to be scared of it, but recently I’ve embraced it. It is much more comforting knowing that we all have this shared experience. It is universal. I think living is a beautiful thing intertwined with a series of unfortunate events. Death of people, death of animals, death of relationships, death of thought and the thought of death are all forms of opportunity for rebirth. Rebirth which helps us grow and be human, to become carefree and our best selves.
My emotions are another source of inspiration. I tend to let my feelings drive much of my art, behind the stage as well as on stage. Many of the performances in venues where I am not constricted tend to have an element of both life and death. In a way, I am a reminder to the audience that in order to reach glory, you have to overcome all the obstacles and fires of living fully. My emotions can sometimes dictate the choice in song, the choice in hair, outfit, etc. that I will be providing the eyes and minds of those feasting in the crowd. One week I can be really happy, performing Top 40 Pop songs, the next week I can be having a rough week, where I’ll solely be performing ballads or songs more in tune with my emotions. Allowing to feel everything in my head, every single sensation of anger, sadness, joy, love – really gives for a phenomenal performance (or so I like to think).
All that to say, on my walks to the grocery store, to my friend’s, to the lake, I am always finding different mediums of inspiration that it is difficult to narrow down to only a few simple things. Lady Blanca is an enigmatic ensemble of throwbacks, of hot topics, and of coming times.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a drag queen/performer. I started in 2019, moreso as a hobby/side-project with no intention to make it my professional career. However, after meeting the fabulous Amber St. James, LUXE the Drag Queen, amongst others who attended San Diego State University (SDSU) and the Haus of St. James – I fell even more in love with the art of drag. However, i wasn’t inducted into the family until 2021, two years after doing drag that it just felt correct. i could get into the details between those two years, but we all know the history behind what covid brought. i am now working on so many projects as the administrative assistant for a drag production company, “sister’s of st. james productions” which has helped me develop so many professional skills. besides that, i am solely working on some exciting projects starting with my own music, a third rendition of my lovely show “lady & the tramp”, my first ever drag pageant, and many others that you will have to stay tuned for!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
hillcrest! anywhere you go in hillcrest is a guaranteed fun time! another exciting place to go for drag is “american junkie” in downtown on wednesday’s for “drag bingo” hosted by my good auntie, maddy mokes (@maddymokes)!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to thank you! The people who take some time out of their busy lives to learn a little bit more of my psyche, those who support me in any form!
