Meet Hugo Fresan | Creative Director, Head Designer and Founder of Estudio Chapman

We had the good fortune of connecting with Hugo Fresan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hugo, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting and running my own business had always been a lifelong dream of mine. I always pictured myself building a business from the ground up. I pictured myself living out of what I’m passionate about and truly love. Luckily, I grew up within a family unit that always owned their own businesses, I looked up to that and knew that’s what I wanted to do. Within my city, I saw the need for my type of business and I took it as an opportunity. Owning a business gives me the opportunity to make an impact within my community.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
SDV – “Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about.” HF – I live by the philosophy of less is more, and think my design work thoroughly reflects it. I focus on the key important aspects of a project and dispose of all the extra noise. I always think, “how can I make it different from the rest” without compromising its integrity and still make it stand out. I am most proud of the ability I’ve gained to understand a client’s idea and through my creative process, turn it into a reality.
SDV – “How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way.”
HF – I have gotten to where I am now in a professional setting by having clear goals about what I wanted and where I wanted to be. I’m fortunate to have my work resonate with my clients and through their recommendations grow my network and business. Nothing good ever comes easy. Like any craft, the more you do it, the better you get at it. I think lots of practice, trial and error. Working on different kinds of projects over the years, refined my work and got me we’re I am today. What I’ve learned along the way is that If you really want something, you will find a way to make it happen. I’m excited for the future, and where it will take me next.
SDV – “What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?”
HF – While living abroad for two years in Taipei, my creative vision expanded and inspired me to start my creative business. Since it was always a dream of mine to own my own design agency, at Estudio Chapman we thrive to deliver the best possible results in a modern and innovative way. As we are evolving with technology and modern communication mediums, we aim to find new and creative ways to communicate a project’s needs. Constantly learning and updating our knowledge gives us an opportunity to find new ways to help our clients. We aspire to be on the edge of modernization and adapt to change quickly.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
SDV – Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc. HF – I am lucky enough to be born and grow up on this border, having access to the best from both countries. I would start lunch off with good ol’ carne asada tacos from Taqueria Hipodromo located behind the famous Horse Track and Casino, followed by a “Cafe de la Olla Latte’ from Cafe Hidalgo. For dinner, I’d cross over to San Diego for one of the best smash burgers in town from The Neighborhood in North Park.
SDV: In your view, what are some of the most fun, interesting, exciting people, places or things to check out?
HF – In Tijuana, Estudio Chapman is usually my favorite hangout spot with friends. We love having visits! Also, once a month on the weekends, my other project, B-SIDE, an event production company, hosts music events and we get to bring and promote talent from all over the world. Those are super fun and exciting nights. Check us out at www.bside.dance
In San Diego, I enjoy hanging out in Solana Beach at Big Fish Tattoo where my sister works as a tattoo artist (check her out @karmarianna). I also enjoy watching the sunset with my girlfriend by the beach in Solana Beach or skating on the boardwalk of Pacific Beach. San Diego has some beautiful sights!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My alma mater CEDIM (Centro de Estudios Superiores de Diseño de Monterrey), whose faculty always pushed us students to innovate and create. My family for their undying support, and a special thanks to my sister Marianna who helped me get this project off the ground. Finally, my Grandma, always rooting for his (favorite) grandson.
