We had the good fortune of connecting with Boris Bauer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Boris, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It was a very organic transition. I came to the US as a fashion photographer and towards 2000 had built my own portfolio site, I received great feedback and colleagues of mine asked me to build one for them as well. It kind of took off. Then someone asked for an ecommerce site, email marketing became popular and within a short period I needed help and started hiring freelancers. I was at the right time and had a service offering that people needed. I was also getting disillusioned with the photography business.

What should our readers know about your business?
I never went to college, and I am completely self-taught. Without formal training I was able to recognize where my talents are and created a career out of it. I worked for a publicly traded international business as the Head of Marketing and User Experience, and I worked at a large international agency in the world as Head of Digital, North America, being responsible for projects at the highest level for clients such as Rolex, IBM, VW, Bayer, Nestle etc. In the end I came to the conclusion that I am the happiest when working as a consultant, with my own teams that I bring to the table. I learned that I thrive working with small and midsize companies and that their feedback and success is what keeps me motivated and happy. I have seen great people, turning sour and bitter, struggling to stay true to who they are because of the pressures created by their daily work environment. I am glad that I tried and won’t miss these experiences for anything, but came to a conclusion that it is not for me.
I take pride that I can deliver my expertise and perspective from working for Fortune 500 companies and bring that same sophistication of digital marketing to small and mid-sized businesses.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love showing friends the landscape of LA. We may grab a coffee in the am at Madlab on Pico and then I take them on a scenic drive of Mulholland Drive all the way to Matador Beach or Zuma beach with a detour through the Malibu mountains and canyons. Sunset on Zuma beach, then driving back on the PCH. Since I moved from NYC to LA I have developed a love for burritos from El Chato Taco Truck, which is close to where I live. I recently took friends to the Academy Museum and I loved the Godfather exhibition and props being shown. We may also grab a lunch sandwich from Jackson Market and Deli in Culver and then drive up (or walk up) to the Culver Stairs to enjoy the view and lunch. For an afternoon walk at the beach with dinner and drinks I like to go to Playa Del Rey and have dinner at Playa Provisions, with drinks from their Grain Whisky bar in the back, their cocktails are fantastic. For bars I also like The Sunset marquis restaurant bar. I would definitely include a drive out to Joshua Tree, Other restaurants and bars: Des Croissants Paris (best croissants in LA), Normandie bakery and restaurant for best French baguette (nobody comes even close). Mizlala West Adams is fantastic and affordable. Kismet Rotisserie and a drink at Covell after. BBQ in Korea town.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Throughout my career I worked a few time with business coaches and that process helped tremendously and I encourage everyone to find a mentor, advisor etc to bounce ideas off. I am also a big fan of https://www.manager-tools.com/. Their frameworks and methods helped me over and over during times where I went corporate or was working at agencies with larger teams that I had to manage.
