We had the good fortune of connecting with Gigi Vera Vincent and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gigi, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
When people hear about a doula, they usually think about home births, but doulas support all types of birth and postpartum. Some of my clients have their babies at a birth center or at home, but most of them deliver their babies in a hospital. For those clients, I’m educating them about their options, helping them create their birth preferences, and advocating to make that birth a reality.

Most people don’t realize that doulas also advocate and support clients during postpartum. As a postpartum doula, I’m teaching parents how to care for their baby in the early days. I’m also supporting healing through amazing ancient practices such as Ayurvedic postnatal Abhyanga body work or Malaysian Bengkung belly binding. I empower families, so once baby arrives, they can focus on resting and bonding instead of researching or stressing. I streamline the newborn learning curve and guide birth parents, partners, and other family members.

What should our readers know about your business?
My goal as a doula is to leave my clients feeling confident in their role as a parent. Often, people associate having a baby with all of the stuff that you need for that baby. I advocate for my clients to separate themselves from the idea that babies need so many things. While babies do need some things, parents should move away from buying their way to feeling confident. Instead of a baby registry filled with swaddles and bottles, I want people to add services to their registries like doulas, pelvic floor physical therapists, and postpartum massages. When expecting parents focus on creating their village – with friends, family, and hired support – they are more well-rested and knowledgeable. As a doula, I can be one small part of that village!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m so lucky to have clients all over north and south Orange County, so I’m able to explore many neighborhoods. One of my favorite spots is the Anti-Lab in Costa Mesa; it has great food, coffee, and shopping and one of my favorite refill shops – Eco-Now.

Anaheim has a few areas I love to stop in at – The Packing House and Center Street. They both have the best shops, food, coffee, and treats!

I also love exploring Irvine; one of my favorite coffee shops – Cup by Blue Hummingbird – is in the Great Park area, which is a beautiful place to wander and bring kids for a picnic. For shopping, the Spectrum is a must. I work in Newport Beach a lot as well and love to stop at Stereoscope Coffee then explore the beach in the afternoon.

Lastly, I live in Fullerton, and there are so many amazing spots. The Fullerton Arboretum is a beautiful place to walk and great for kids. Downtown Fullerton has delicious food – Pour Vida, Twisted Vine, Let It Brie, and tons more.

And, I would absolutely have to recommend a farmer’s market! My favorite is Orange Home Grown on Saturdays, with the chance to explore the Orange Circle shops afterward!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be the doula that I am if it weren’t for the doula community that I’m a part of in Southern California and beyond. I’ve learned from organizations like BreastfeedLA and Birthing Advocacy to use my platform to support the diverse community that I represent. I also am grateful to the many resources that I’m able to share with my clients.
