We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Blake and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kim, what makes you happy? Why?
It really is the little things in life that make me happy. Don’t get me wrong, big things are exciting and give me a burst of happiness, but when I recognize that I am feeling happy, the little things always come to mind. Hugging my dogs, spending time with my best friend, wandering around on a hiking trail, sipping on a nice glass of wine, hearing one of my favorite songs on the radio, or biting into a fresh cinnamon roll. These are just some of the things that I am truly grateful for.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As the owner and web designer of Alpha Webworks, I enjoy helping nonprofits and small businesses succeed with their online goals. Each project brings a new challenge in creating a website that delivers a client’s brand. Learning about a client’s organization or business is always fun, and it’s interesting to discover how they got started. Knowing their story helps with the design process and allows me to convey their message effectively.

Creating websites has been a challenging road but rewarding. There’s a lot to learn, and keeping up with industry trends can get overwhelming. Building websites using WordPress while working with ideal clients has made it easier. Finding what interests me the most helps me provide expert web design and development advice. And to keep up with the latest web technology, I set aside time each week to learn something new. Whether for web design, a tip for software I use, or a new way of supporting my clients, this allows me to grow and brainstorm fresh ideas.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being a native, I so enjoy letting others know about the best places to visit, and I live for travel itineraries.

Some of the things we’d do:

• Brunch at Claire’s in Solana Beach

•Hike one of many trails in Anza Borrego—depending on the time of year—then relax at Pablito’s with a blue margarita.

• Check out the sunset at Sunset Cliffs and enjoy some Pho at OB Noodle House.

• Visit a museum at Balboa Park and head to happy hour at Parc Bistro.

• Pack a picnic for some wine tasting in Escondido. Yes, Escondido! It’s awesome.

• For the finale, see a play at the Cygnet Theatre.

Just thinking about this makes me want to get out there. I love San Diego!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh my gosh! There are many people I’d love to thank. My family and friends have always supported my business journey, and I feel fortunate for that. My mom has always encouraged me to do what makes me happy. She’s honest and gives the best advice, even when it’s not what I hoped for. When that happens, I rethink my approach for the best possible outcome.

When I started my business, my friend, Todd—a small business owner—would always invite me to networking groups he was attending and refer me to others who needed help with their WordPress websites. He would also give me ideas on how I could grow my business. It was great that he wanted to share his business experience to help me succeed.

My favorite book for business is The 1-Page Marketing Plan by Allan Dib. Each chapter is dedicated to a marketing step, so it’s not one of the books that repeats itself page after page.
