We had the good fortune of connecting with Tom Gaim and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tom, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my business was the belief that I have strong social skills as well as knowledge of retirement, insurance and financial world. So, I asked myself, what can I do to share this with the world? I come from an immigrant family, and I have always had interest of sharing any information that I gained to people that do not understand the American system. When my family immigrated from East Africa in the early 80’s to Los Angeles, we had no knowledge of the basic resources that the United States offered, but as the eldest child of six, it was always my responsibility to assist the family and other non-English speaking individuals, to interpret the resources that are available to them. Now as an adult, I thought about extending those experiences I learned as a child into my business by wanting to offer retirement, insurance and financial knowledge I gained and share with it all that are interested. Growing up in Los Angeles and the Bay Area, surrounded by diverse cultural groups also enhanced my social skills. California’s strong diversity along with my unique Eritrean background really taught me how to engage with people from all over the world. Knowledge of complex financial instruments means nothing if you do not have the awareness to communicate with diverse groups.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What we offer at BM Wealth is the ability to empower you by providing financial literacy and access to material that will help you make better financial decisions. I provide information that is based on the proper research and facts. As our customer you will have access to financial articles, blogs, and educational material. You as the customer will determine what the right information is for you. As a financial consulting firm, you are the most important investment to this firm. We are not concerned with commission, shareholders, or Wall Street investors. The single most important task we have is providing you with important financial information that will empower you financially. Not only is this our fiduciary responsibility but we simply care about your financial existence. The customer always comes first. For us our integrity is everything. We make sure our clients don’t have to worry about our principles, since honesty is the best policy. When we provide financial strategies, we understand each client’s life, financial plan, and family is impacted by the quality of information we provide. Our word is our bond. What I want the world to know is that the most valuable resource in the world is not money but it is people. The ability to help and empower people is the single most influential act anyone can perform. When you inform one person there is an immediate butterfly effect that will touch more people than you will realize. This why it is always important to take the time to help others when they genuinely ask for help. Connecting and communicating with people from different parts of the world has given me the satisfaction to know that I’m making a positive contribution to the world.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Living and working in Sacramento, there is a lot of culture as well as interesting sites to visit. Sacramento is known for their historical significance from the California gold rush and food culture. A weeklong itinerary would look like this: Day 1: Choose a farm to fork restaurant that Sacramento is known for where there is always a desire to use fresh and natural ingredients. Then follow it up with a nice bar since the night life never boring.
Day 2: Visit an historical spot since Sacramento has a rich Gold Rush history. Old Sacramento is always a great tourist’s attraction along with the state capital.
Day 3: Sacramento has a great outdoor life as well. There are so many good areas for taking hikes, bike trails, and fishing. The city is surrounded by rivers, lakes, and trails, so whatever the decision is there are plenty of options.
Day 4: Due to Sacramento’s historical significance there are plenty of museums to visit. From Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park to the Crocker Museum you will not go wrong with those. I personally enjoy the California Railroad Museum.
Day 5: Another popular activity in our area would be the Midtown Farmers Market. Here you can have fresh produce from local farmers, food vendors from all cultural backgrounds and other interesting crafts.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In my journey of life there have been many people who have helped, supported, mentored, loved and encouraged me. There simply is not enough space to write about all of those individuals who have had a positive impact on my life. However, to keep it simple, my success in life has come directly from my parents. My parents are from a small East African nation called Eritrea. They both grew up in small villages as farmers. They immigrated to South-Central, Los Angeles in early the 80s. With no formal education, not speaking English at all, they were able to survive and thrive in the complex American system. It is their perseverance, determination, will power, discipline, and not taking no for answer that has inspired me that anything is possible with focus. My parents have a tenacious work ethic and watching them raise 6 kids while performing back breaking work can only inspire a person to pursue and achieve success. Due to them, I’m the first in my family to obtain a graduate degree from UC Davis and start my own business. In addition, I take great inspiration from Warren Buffett, Tony Robbins, Robert Greene, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Bruce Lee, and Nelson Mandela. All of these individuals are examples of experience, knowledge, humility and self-awareness. As an undergraduate student at Seattle University, I had the pleasure of meeting President Nelson Mandela. As a fellow African, meeting President Mandela was inspiring beyond words. Reading about one of life heroes is one thing but to actually meet them in person and hear them speak is another level of influence. I’m sure there will be more mentors in my life as I continue to learn and grow. I look forward to the life challenges.
