Meet Anna Rose Fahrenkrog | Film Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Anna Rose Fahrenkrog and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anna Rose, what inspires you?
I am inspired by the emotion and nostalgic feelings Super 8 film evokes. I remember the first time I watched a Super 8 film. I came across a film of my favorite surfer Jaleesa Vincent, Tuckeroo, by creator Patti, where they used both digital and film footage. Every time the video switched over to film, I was amazed by how beautifully the colors came out and how the vivid personality of Jaleesa shone through. It felt far more special to watch the film through this lens. This is when I was first inspired to pursue this form of video creation.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My name is Anna Rose. I am the woman behind the camera for my business Anna Rose 8mm. Growing up I was fascinated by the film photos my relatives shared with me, specifically those of their wedding day. Once I was able to get my hands on a film camera, I began documenting my life through my friends and our surroundings. I felt such excitement every time my photos were ready for pickup. This excitement blossomed into a growing interest in other forms of film photography.
My journey with Super 8 began as experimental yet intentional. Once I picked up my first Super 8 camera, I learned its methods and quirks as I went. I learned from my mistakes and found beauty in them. For my first film, I allowed my surroundings to inspire me and picked up my camera whenever I found something beautiful. My loved ones talking, a stranger petting their dog on the beach, the snapped surfboards decorating a backyard fence, or my boyfriend driving us down the coast.
When I received the email with the file of my first Super 8 film, my stomach turned with nerves and excitement. I felt an overwhelming rush of emotions when I opened the file. The nostalgia the images evoked was incredible. As I watched the video play with my roommates by my side, we actually shed a few tears just watching how beautiful our friends and lives were. From that moment I knew that this was unlike any other form of photography. It was much more special.
As I am early along in my journey, the road has been relatively smooth so far. The main challenge I have faced has been sourcing the cameras that I use. Super 8 cameras were only made from 1965 until the mid ’70s, making them difficult to find in fully functioning condition. It is also vital to test the camera, which comes with a price as developing Super 8 film is not cheap. Additionally, only a small handful of camera labs still process Super 8 film in the United States.
I am excited about what the future holds. I look forward to creating everlasting memories for those I work with. At the end of the day, my dream is truly to make people feel the emotions I felt when I watched my first Super 8 video!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In my eyes, a perfect day in San Diego consists of a morning surf in either Ocean Beach or Sunset Cliffs, followed by a massive breakfast burrito from Don Tommy’s. Next on the agenda is to lay out at Garbage Beach and soak in the warmth with a book and some good friends. I’d finish off the day with a concert at one of the incredible music venues in San Diego. My favorites include Belly Up Tavern, The Casbah, and Winston’s OB.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my shoutout to my lovely boyfriend Taylor. He supports my dream and believes wholeheartedly in my ability to succeed. As an entrepreneur himself, Taylor is the person who has encouraged me to pursue Super 8 film creation as a business.
