Meet Matt Nuth | Author

We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Nuth and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
Honesty. It might sound trite, but I think it’s a value that has largely taken a backseat in recent decades. We see the lack of commitment to honesty almost everywhere: in the news sources we watch, in the rumors and stories we repeat, in the personas we create for ourselves on social media. As a note, I am not defining honesty as merely the avoidance of lying, but to a larger definition that includes a commitment to not deceiving in any way. Unfortunately, we are bombarded continuously with partial truths that devide and damage us.
I was raised under the adage of truth being the best policy and have found that to ALWAYS be true. It minimizes misunderstandings, missteps, hurt, and mistrust.
Why is so easy to slip away from honesty? I guess it’s always seductive to avoid tough issues, but I also think we have had a culture shift to one in which winning is everything anything goes in the achievement of that goal… including our civility and integrity.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Writing has always been fun for me. In business, the challenge was to communicate quickly, clearly, and simply… leaving no room for misunderstanding.
With novels I take a similar same tack, but there’s a story to tell; it has to be interesting, it has to be engrossing, it has to surprise and grip the reader or make them feel emotion. My first novel made people cry, my second made the reader fear and feel troubled. The third will sadden and surprise. I think the aspect of my writing that might set it apart from most novelists we see today is that I refuse to be defined by one genre. I write based on what seems interesting and I get inspiration from everyday occurrances. In other words, I don’t have a basic story formula I adhere to.
I do have some rules that guide me, however: don’t waste words, develop what needs development, but don’t waste time with meaningless things, and always place myself in the world of my charcters. This last point is critical. I even write mostly in the first person because it helps me imagine and communicate not just what a character does, but why.
My readers find my work to be the type you don’t want to read but you can’t put it down. That said, it’s not for everyone. It is mature and can be unsettling; to some it is too intense. It’s not for the feint of heart. By the way, for those wanting to taste my work, you can find it in Amazon by searching for M. D. Nuth.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
What isn’t fun in San Diego. Day One would be a visit to Balboa Park for a picnic and visit to the museums, capping off the day with a quick dinner and drinks at Trust. Day Two would be start with a USS Midway tour. After taking in some military history, enjoy a walk along the bay to take in life along the water before hopping on a segway for a quick tour of downtown. Finish Day Two with an early dinner at The Lion’s Share and a concert at Rady Shell. Day three head inland. Time to visit to visit Julian for some apple pie and to get a touch of the mountains and hiking. Don’t forget to try out some of the regions most authentic mexican food in Ramona before heading back to the city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
That’s easy, but I have to cheat and provide you with two shoutouts. The first is my wife. She is incredibly supportive, but also my favorite critic. Not only can I count on her for kind words and encouragement when I need it, but she is also willing to call me on the carpet when I’m not at my best. I would not have any of the things this tremendous world has provided me: a loving family, a couple successful careers, a wealth of friends… without her. In fact, i would have never written my first book, Countenance of Man, and now I have a second, Nails, with a third and fourth, My Brother’s Keeper and The Day Before Tomorrow, on the way.
My second shout out goes to Bible. It might not be as popular to cite the Bible or one’s faith as it once was, but I cannot think of one source of truth that has impacted me more. Although I am hardly a scholar of the Bible, I can say that EVERY time I read as an adult I get something new from it. Of course, it wasn’t always that way. When I was young, reading it was something more akin to a chore. Today, it’s a gift.
