Meet Mitch McGinley | Business Sales Advisor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mitch McGinley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mitch, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to help local business owners successfully exit their businesses. Only something like 20% of small business owners eventually sell their businesses, and there is no reason for that to be true. With a little bit of planning, strategy and trusted advisors, every business owner should be able to maximize their value, and the day they sell should be their biggest payday.

What should our readers know about your business?
I’m an expert in business sales and acquisitions, specializing in boutique fitness, health and wellness. It’s such a specific niche, but I love my industry, and I love helping business owners grow and/or exit. It’s an incredibly stressful process, that often takes way longer than anyone would like, but in the end, should be a win/win, where the seller gets paid, the business lives on, and a new owner takes over and brings new life. My journey to this place is pretty random. I never would’ve thought when I was 25 this is what I would be doing. It started when I fell in love with yoga. I was working in hotel mgmt, specifically at the Omni San Diego for almost seven years. I left to work with a startup that was buying, fixing up and then selling boutique hotels. But one day the owner of our favorite yoga studio called us and said she wanted to sell, and she wanted to sell to us. It was a dream that we always had, the timing was perfect, and we took the plunge. It wasn’t easy! Scary moments leaving the comfort of a job with benefits to take a risk on a business that needed to grow. But we did it. A few years in I started a consulting company, working with mindbody online to help to help studio owners all over the world with things like pricing strategy and sales funnels. But after we sold the studio for almost five times what we bought it for, I went to work with Sean Seaman and Dustin Sigall at SD Business Advisors to merge all my worlds, and become an expert in business sales and acquisitions, in my beloved industry.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in OB and I love OB with all my heart so I’m not sure I”d leave this neighborhood very much, LOL. It doesn’t get much better than South Beach for fish tacos and ocean view sunsets. Additional shoutouts to 3rd Corner, The Joint, Raglan, and 1502. But if we had a whole week, I’d definitely hit up Little Italy, Balboa Park, and Del Mar. A day at the races followed by Jake’s is a top shelf experience. Little Italy I just love the community feel in an urban area. And I love the architecture and green space in Balboa Park. My wife Karson is well known in the theater community here, and we love going to see shows whenever we have the chance. Most people don’t know but San Diego has an incredible theater community. Whether going high end at La Jolla Playhouse or the Old Globe, or community theaters like OB Playhouse, there is a plethora of talent and so many wonderful places (Cygnet, Moonlight, New Village Arts, North Coast Rep, Moxie, Lamb’s Players) among many others.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Naturally there are a TON of people who helped me get where I am today. But for this particular shoutout – I’d like to recognize my mother in law, Jan St John. My father in law Pat is the coolest person and deserves lots of credit too…I’m incredibly lucky….but as it relates to business Jan has been there for me in ways that no one else ever has. For starters, she birthed my wife Karson, who is my favorite person in the world. I know that wasn’t easy. But she deserves so much appreciation for getting us to where we are today. Jan owned a boutique fitness studio in NJ for over 30 years, and that studio is still running today. She was the first person in my entire extended family (that I’m aware of) who took on entrepreneurship and absolutely crushed it. She is incredibly smart, savvy and creative. She knows a ton about most things. And she believed in me….in a way that no one else ever has.
