We had the good fortune of connecting with Zak Seymour and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zak, what makes you happy? Why?
As an artist, I find painting to be a deeply gratifying art form. It requires discipline, heavy introspection, and perseverance. I derive happiness from it when a finished painting really resonates with someone and a connection is made. There’s something very human about it.

But also good waves and dogs haha.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
For the last few years, I have been primarily focused on painting places near where I live in Encinitas in an expressionistic style. Currently, I’m most excited about continuing to grow as an artist and to push the evolution of my work as much as possible.

My paintings are 20 years in the making. I started painting surfboards when I was 18, studied painting and drawing at UCSD, got heavily into digital painting and photoshop composites with the goal of working in the entertainment industry in my 20’s, and reconnected with painting 7 years ago while being a caretaker for my dad in the later stages of his Parkinson’s.

Reflecting on my trajectory as an artist, it’s interesting to think about the ways in which the exploration of other media and life experiences over the years informs my work today. If theres a takeaway, it’s that everyones path is different, and what may have seemed like wrong turns or deviations in the past can be useful sources of wisdom for today. I hope thats not too corny haha

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would recommend they walk Torrey Pines or hike/mountain bike noble canyon, surf once or twice and hang out at the beach, grab takeout and enjoy a sunset & view at Kate Sessions park, hit up multiple breweries, catch a Padres game, play some golf, and see what’s going on in Balboa Park. I would insist they try fish tacos or a burrito from fish 101, and Italian from Buona Forchetta. In the evening I’d suggest they grab dinner and drinks in Little Italy, check out a show at the Observatory or Belly Up, get some laughs in at the Comedy Store, or find a fire pit on the beach.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family and friends.
