We had the good fortune of connecting with Zach Friedli and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zach, what is the most important factor behind your success?
What brings me success is to have an open mind. Having an open mind has not only brought me to try new styles and opportunities but mentally it made me grow as a person. The more Iv become open minded to art and life aspects it’s made me more creative because of trying new things Iv never thought I would try. From being open to anything I have so much knowledge and skills that Iv learn that I can use into my art. It has made me be able to bring a uniqueness to the drag community. But being open minded not only to art but to people. There are so many different personalities within the drag community and it is so great to be able to learn from someone no matter how much older or younger they are from you, you can learn something from their perspective that you can get from anyone else and you can use that. What ever you learn from art or people it changed you as a person and being able to change and transform your mind constantly is my biggest success.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is Drag. My style in drag does differ from time to time but what Iv not nice a reoccurring theme is high fashion camp. I love fashion but the typical standard of fashion is quite boring so I love to give character and personality. But the part that sets me different from the other is my ability to combine style or themes that you would never think would go together. So basically you can throw whoever at me and will make it 10x more creative than what people would think. What drag makes me the most excited and proud about is working hard in creating a concept and make it into a reality then being able to show and express myself to my community. To be able to put your blood, sweat, and many tears when the sewing machine isn’t working with you and have a finalized product you are excited about and love makes me think that if I can do that to make something my head to reality I can do to other aspects of my life in opportunities. Getting to where I am today with my drag I didn’t have a not of physical challenges but mostly just internal challenges. From when I first started I didn’t have confidence and trust within myself and would be doubt my abilities and people were starting to be able to see that in my face. But what got me to finally gain more trust and confidence is to do not question myself. When making an outfit or performing I end up doing best when I just don’t think just do and let my subconscious do the work and more times than not afterward I realized wow that went a lot better than I though just because I do and not think especially with having any doubts or ego getting in the way. What I want people to learn about my brand or story is to trust your instincts because whatever they lead you to always going to be great.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of my favorite spots in the city is on Thursdays at gossip grill is a drag show hosted by Mariam T. Sundays at the rail is a drag brunch at the Rail hosted by Strawberry Corncakes then later at night at Rich’s is STUNT a interactive queer night with all different types of nightlife performers hosted by strawberry corncakes and Keex Rose.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are three people I give so much of the credit in my story. First of my mother she gave me the tools and lessons I need in to survive in life. My drag sister, Luxe the Drag Queen she was my gateway into the path I’m on now with drag and drag is such a huge part of my identity. The last person is my drag mother for being a mentor to me and teaching me about culture and skills.
