We had the good fortune of connecting with Yesenia Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yesenia, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the most important factor behind the success I’ve had is the attention to detail in my work, as well as the products I’ve chosen to create a delicious taste.
Every order I try my best to create an amazing set. I want to have every pop to be eye catching. I have also taken my time picking products that taste good. I have my chocolate shipped from the east coast and it’s completely worth it.
I don’t just want something to look beautiful, I want it to taste delicious where you have to have another.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart really is that I can make anything into a cake pop. Yes, there is challenging ideas but I try my best to find a way to make cake into art. I am so proud of all the work I have put into this business. I never thought I would own my own business. It did take a lot of support from friends and family to get the word out there and I am thankful every day for them. One picture or post made such a big difference for my page. I also had a few trusting clients place an order with me in my early days and they are still some of my biggest supporters till this day.
I don’t think building a business is easy at all. I think it takes a lot of work, patience, failures and trust. If something does not work, I have to try something else. I take it day by day and know at times things can get uncomfortable but thats how you know growth will be happening soon.
I’ve learned a lot and I am lucky to make friends with other bakers to discuss or ask questions.
I want everyone to know that my product is always unique to them, even if i’ve had that theme before, I make it different for them. I put a lot of work into every pop.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’ll we would definitely start at a breakfast spot, food and coffee is a must to start the day. I love local restaurants and living in San Diego there’s an abundance of it. I love Arandas Cafe in IB for breakfast.
Then from there we can go explore. I love the zoo and balboa park, they are always great spots to go walk and explore. Also the ferry from Coronado to DT is always great. Or even a walk in Torrey Pines. We would also do a beach trip because it pretty much beach weather almost all year long.
We would definitely do a coffee shop tour, going to all local shops like Feliz Coffee Club in South Bay, Cafecito in IB, Por Vida in Barrio Logan just to name a few.
As far as other spots we would need to go to we would have to go to Convoy to eat and also have to go get some amazing tacos down south.
We live in such a beautiful place with so many places to see, anywhere we go we would find something to do.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank my husband. Without his support and encouragement I don’t think I would have made it past 3 months of business. He reminds me I am good, he reminds me to take breaks, he is my main taste tester, he will be honest with me. He has believed in me since I had this idea and he’s been there every step.
