Meet Yasmine Tatim | Meditation, Yoga and Wellness Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Yasmine Tatim and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yasmine, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
After hearing from many students “I can’t meditate” “I can’t sit still” “I’m too active to meditate” “I’m too busy” Observing how stress slows down their productivity and diminishes their quality of life, and how they struggle to pause the momentum of their busy life to make a change, I wanted to create a way for busy people to experience the scientifically proven benefits of meditation and feel successful while living their regular lives.
After a decade practicing and studying several meditation techniques and immersed in buddhist and Hindu practices, combined with new science (neuroscience and neural plasticity) I realized that active meditation would be easier and more inviting than passive meditation approaches offered by most meditation apps. Also, I wanted to create a way for them to actually make progress and eventually be self sufficient to meditate 2x daily just like brushing their teeth every day without effort.
So I developed a technique that includes movement, laughter, yoga breathing techniques, mindfulness and self inquiry. Uplift Meditation is designed to stimulate the release of feel-good hormones (dopamine, serotonin, endorphins and oxytocin) fast, so a beginner can feel the results such as improved mood and clarity of mind after the first session.
Another challenge people face with meditation is to commit and make time for it consistently until it becomes a habit. A study shows that people are 95% more likely to stick to a new habit with accountability friends. With that in mind we offer 5x LIVE-streamed classes a week so they’re not alone doing it. They get to interact and ask questions LIVE. We are becoming more isolated and lonely than ever before, so community is fundamental in supporting wellbeing.
Our mission at Uplift Meditation is to create a community and take meditation farther into personal development, all with LIVE accountability, real time support and without taking ourselves too seriously 🙂
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Uplift Meditation is a meditation and personal development platform offering live-streamed meditation classes, on-demand guided meditation videos, coaching calls and workshops focused on wellness. What sets us apart is the LIVE, real-time interactive meditation experience and our active meditation technique, which is designed to make meditation a friendly, welcoming and fun practice for people who say “I’m too busy to meditate”. I’m beyond proud to hear from students “this practice is changing my life” after only 2 weeks in the community and no previous experience. I’ve got to this point after a decade on my own wellness journey and counting, teaching yoga, meditation and coaching clients hearing their difficulties with their mental and physical health and roadblocks they encounter while trying to improve their lifestyle.
Since it is a new business with a different approach to meditation, our challenge is to educate, invite and help people understand the importance of a meditation practice for our overall wellbeing, and overcome a common belief that meditation is hard or boring.
Modern science is now catching up with ancient teachings and giving us information that helps us communicate in a way that people can understand the power of such a simple, yet profound practice when comes to regulating our nervous system, healing and creating lasting positive change physically and mentally.
Apart from creating a new business, technology is still a challenge for me and for many students who didn’t grow up with the internet. To help with that we needed patience and a sense of humor while we adapt to a ever growing digital experience. Shoutout to tech experts who help us a lot along the way, hiring a team to help me with that was fundamental.
I’ve learned that reaching out for help getting started is a game-changer while navigating the creation, launch and development of our small business.
I’d love the world to know that every human being has the potential to feel physically, mentally and emotionally well and joyful. I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety myself due to stress at work back when I was a fashion designer. Meditation has had such a profound impact in my life that I decided to leave that career to learn more about our mind and teach people they can too live a stress-free lifestyle with a bit of inner work 😉
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Every time someone comes to visit me in SD they know they’ll do a lot of Yoga, eat yummy wholesome food and hang out at the beach or go for hikes.
I live in Carlsbad so before heading to Carlsbad Beach for a swim, my go-to for coffee and light snacks is Lofty Coffee on State St.
One of my favorite things to do is to shop at the farmer’s marked and cook a fresh, delicious meal to enjoy with company at home. Carlsbad Village farmers market on Wednesdays has everything you need and it’s fun to hang out with local farmers.
For a hike, I’d take them to Solana Beach and do the Torrey Pines Hike along the coast, it’s fairly easy and stunning! After a hike nothing better than a yoga class! We’d take them to a Restore class at Yogasix studio in Solana Beach, where I also teach at :). Choice Juicery would be our next stop for a delicious and nutritious smoothie and great atmosphere.
For dinner I’d take them to Taste of the Himalayas on Carlsbad Village Dr, the best Nepali, Indian and Tibetan cuisine in town.
On a more western note, I’d take them to Paon Wine Bar and French-inspired California cuisine for wine tasting and Live piano music on Saturday nights.
One day I’d take the train Downtown SD and eat at one of the many great Italian restaurants in Little Italy, then catch the ferry to Coronado Island, hang out at Coronado beach and hopefully catch the return ferry at sunset time, it is absolutely beautiful!
The San Diego Museum of Art at Balboa Park is a beautiful choice to appreciate art and nature in one single visit and make a day out of it!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to Sunnataram Buddhist Monastery in the Blue Mountains, Australia where I first started studying meditation. Next, shoutout to World Peace Yoga School in Rishikesh, India where I attained 2 of my Yoga trainings and learned the power of laughing meditation, part of the Uplift Meditation Technique today.
