We had the good fortune of connecting with William Lopez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi William, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I contribute my success to listening, connecting with people on a personal level, and looking for opportunities to recognize the commitment of my team members and vendors. I contribute the success of our brand to our Think Tank approach (learn more about this approach on our website), our dedication to clients, and having a seat at the table with our clients (As it relates to elevating their brand awareness and reputation).
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Alternative Strategies is a full service marketing communications firm. At Alternative Strategies, we’ve built our business on the principle that every product, company, and organization has something that sets them apart. Something different. Unique. Special. Whether they know it or not. Our job is to find that difference and fool around with it. Bend it. Twist it. Shape it into something that will make your customers say “wow.” You could call it integrated marketing. We call it our “Commonsense Approach” that has not only made our agency and clients successful, but it has organically evolved the way we think about business. I got to where I am today by being humble, remembering my roots, taking care of others and working hard. There have always been challenges along the way (and there always will be). It’s those challenges that shape you, test you and allow you to demonstrate your leadership and commitment to those watching you (and there are always people watching you). Over the past twenty years of owning Alternative Strategies, I have learned people come and go (clients, vendors, team members). It is up to me to ensure the long term integrity of self and mission- and to ensure those standards are met and carried out by those supporting my journey. People should know that we are passionate about our work and place a high value on the creative process, remembering to always measure results. And we focus on doing work that is distinctive and meaningful. We value and maintain a great work environment where we bring both professionalism and fun to every project, while being very respectful of our clients’ investments in us. We also strive to be flexible and easy to work with in every aspect of a working relationship.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My go-to places when friends visit San Diego is to ensure they experience the vibrancy and different communities our city has to offer. This includes checking out the self realization center (Encinitas), followed by lunch at Union Kitchen and Tap (short walk away). Breakfast at Feast & Fareway, followed by a walk around Coronado is definitely a highlight. I have to show off Little Italy, so having dinner and Cloak and Petal, followed by a stop at Pali Wine and lastly some ice cream at salt & straw. I always spend a day showing off all the places to eat and drink in PB. We typically have one drink and one food item (to share) at several places (including Mavericks, Backyard Kitchen & Tap, The Duck Dive, Waterbar, and Tower 23). I love Rebecca Jade (local singer), so I look to see where she is performing and head there for dinner or drinks. Other neighborhoods we visit include North Park (where my office is located- and it reminds a lot of my friends of our hometown Chicago vibe). Stops in North Park include City Taco, The Original 40 Brewing and West Coast Tavern. I love a Torrey Pines hike, followed by breakfast at Breakfast Republic. Depending on what sport season it is, we typically watch a game and hang out in the Gaslamp. I like to hop around to different places, so we traditionally watch half the game at The Smoking Gun and end up at barleymash.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Shoutout includes: My Faith- I lean into my faith on a daily basis. Without my relationship and faith, I would not be where I am today. My Husband- His commitment to supporting my work, my goals, accomplishments, and being there to celebrate my lesser strengths is truly admirable. lastly, I am blessed with amazing friends that truly lift me up and help me in this journey called life. A Special Shout Out to Johan, GG, Jen, Wally, Mireya, Dave, Aaron, Tiffany, Diantha, Jayne and Brad/Isabel.
