We had the good fortune of connecting with Will Carey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Will, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I realized after performing in my first school play and getting my first guitar in the Fall of 2001 that I had found what was going to make me the most fulfilled happiest version of myself and that was pursuing the arts. It was the first time that I remember doing something and falling in love with every step of the process, I was excited to stay after school and rehearse, excited to come in on weekends and learn to build sets from scratch, It was the first time in my life that I remember feeling a true passion for something. I remember not only enjoying the rush that is presenting your work to an audience and having them enjoy it, but really enjoying the work itself. That’s when I realized I needed to pursue a creative career.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In addition to being a Stand Up Comic for 15 years, I am the creator of the podcast Between Awesome and Disaster, where I interview comedians, actors, musicians (mostly from pop punk bands) and other creative people about creating things, there lives and mental health. I think I stand out because I also perform stand up, act, record voice over, and play in bands, so I’m able to bring a level of understanding and curiosity to my subjects that the average journalist would not have. Because I’m interested in the things my guests are there is a natural enthusiasm that I like to thing I bring to my podcast. I got to the place I’m currently at from consistently releasing episodes, learning marketing and promotion tactics, and getting on stage a lot to hone my craft and feel comfortable performing in front of people.
I learned that it is important to be consistent, work hard, take time to do things that are just for fun and relaxation, and to find joy in your work so that during the tough beginnings you are still finding joy in the process of creating.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Any friend coming to San Diego I make sure to send to UnderBelly Ramen near Little Italy. It is Delicious Ramen that is unique, delicious and I never get tired of going there. I’d also make sure they go to the Luca Libre Taco Shop for Mexican Food, and then go to a concert at Soma.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe the life I have know to a few people. First the band Blink-182, Their song what’s my Age Again was the first time I heard Pop Punk and it instantly lit up a part of my brain that was long dormant, I wanted to make something that sounded like that and resonated with other people. Second is my best friend Chris McNamara: he had started doing High School Theater before me and continued to encourage me to audition for the school play, I finally did in my 2nd year of High School, fell in love with the stage and the path I’ve followed ever since is entirely because of him getting me to try Theater. Finally my Wife Chelsea is 100% the reason that I am beginning to see some successes in my artistic career. She is very much a Leader and someone who is able to make goals and let nothing stop her from achieving what she wants. Her support, encouragement, and help with understanding business and navigating interpersonal and professional relationships has helped me immeasurably as a naturally introverted person.
