We had the good fortune of connecting with Wen Song and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Wen, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always been a very hands on person and this really manifested itself into crafting, painting, dancing, acting, singing, and other creative outlets. I find art to be a way of expressing myself and my feelings or emotions because sometimes words just simply aren’t enough for me. Expression, feelings, and emotions aren’t linear in the sense that happy is happy and sad is sad; rather, happy is energetic, bright, colorful, you name it. I need to express myself in a way that is bursting with possibilities where there is no right or wrong, there’s just me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I really let my emotions lead where my art goes from the color pallet all the way to textures and the way everything is constructed. One of my most recent projects and the one I’m most proud of, is a dress made out of chip wrappers inspired by my frustration with plastic pollution. I collected chip wrappers from around my neighborhood and school to clean then assemble them into a dress, sounds simple enough right?! This whole process took me over 60 hours, multiple broken needles, and so much experimenting with the fragile material. It was definitely not easy and there were moments of frustration but I didn’t let them stop me because what came out of all of that is my most prized work to date. Creating has it’s highs and lows and everything in between makes me who I am. Sharing a piece of art, something you created from your own mind and hands is, well… vulnerable whether it be via social media, this interview, or by word of mouth. It’s exposing to know I have put a piece of who I am out there for others to see. I’m continuing to learn who I am and the role I play in this world. I just know that I must create.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take a day to explore the beaches and/or Balboa Park. Both are always flourishing with creativity and small businesses.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout firstly to my family and friends who have always supported me and my pursuits no matter how big or small. Next I want to recognize my teachers who continue to inspire and encourage me. They have been a big part of my life and I wouldn’t be who I am today without everyone’s support.
