We had the good fortune of connecting with Wally IV and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Wally IV, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
One stereotype that I constantly hear is that you have to be “creative, artistic, or have the eye for art” to be an artist.

I disagree with this because, I never considered myself to have any of these traits. Especially with photography, I consider it a very technical and logical process; two concepts that are thought to juxtapose the creative process. When I’m in the field shooting, there are certain techniques or skillsets necessary to capture a beautiful image. These skills are learnt by years of practice, and improvisation.

Anyone can take a beautiful image on accident, but to consistently repeat the process requires skill, technique, and understanding.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One thing that I am proud of is that I consider myself to be very flexible in the field, and can adapt to different conditions and environments. I credit this to traveling around the world and working in different situations. This is especially important in the travel and tourism field, which covers such a large variety of content.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Del Mar for sunset is a must. Torrey Pines for hikes. Taco Stand is a necessity!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to shoutout Alen Palander. He is great mentor, and exemplifies the logical and technical process that I described prior.
