We had the good fortune of connecting with Veronica Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Veronica, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
Conventional advice for photography typically includes many rules on composition. While composition is definitely important, I disagree that composition should be confined or limited. The root of the word composition is compose. To compose means to combine elements to make a whole. I like to use what I have around me to capture a whole moment.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Photography is capturing a moment, a feeling. An image which tells a story and conveys or evokes an emotion. I enjoy searching for ways to individualize photos for my clients. To make their photos stand out and not only capture the subject but the style of the client showing the photos. My clients get to be a part of the creative process in their photos.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego is known for its museums, beaches, and parks. I can definitely spend a week visiting Balboa Park, the beaches in Coronado, and the restaurants and nightlife of the Gaslamp Quarter.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To me family can be anyone. I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to my family. My family includes my two daughters, who serve as my constant muses. My family also includes my Mom, my best friend Raquel, my boyfriend Julian, all of who support and encourage me to keep going. My family will always include the local businesses, musicians, and artists that took me under their wing as a local small business. Specifically Jacked Up Brewery for providing the constant encouragement and mentorship that evolved into a friendship. A special thank you to the band, The Smokin Guns, for being incredibly supportive and giving me the freedom to get creative with my photography.
