We had the good fortune of connecting with Van Ethan Levy (they | elle) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Van Ethan, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
My work is deeply rooted in a commitment to social justice, inclusion, and resilience. As a queer, non binary, trans person of color with dynamic disabilities, I leverage my lived experiences and professional expertise to create transformative change within our communities and beyond. My business endeavors are driven by a passion for advocating for marginalized identities and fostering environments where every individual feels supported and validated.

1. An Anti-Oppressive Approach: My work is guided by an anti-oppressive approach that prioritizes empathy, respect, and authenticity. I prioritize supporting individuals across various intersections of identity, including trans and non binary individuals, LGBTQPIA+ communities, and those navigating disability and neurodiversity. Through my practice as a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, I offer a safer and affirming space for clients to explore their identities, build resilience, and navigate their unique challenges.

2. Educational Training and Advocacy: I am dedicated to broadening understanding and reducing harm through educational initiatives. My trainings address critical topics such as trans and non binary identities, disability justice, neurodiversity, and harm reduction. These workshops are designed to equip professionals with the tools to provide more inclusive and supportive services. Notable projects include the Deconstructing Gender: Trans & Non Binary Identities training and the international Do Something: Identity(ies) conference, both of which focus on challenging and transforming systemic biases within the mental health field and beyond.

3. Resource Development: Recognizing the need for accessible and practical resources, I have developed several key tools to support both individuals and professionals. The interactive book Exploring My Identity(ies) provides a structured approach to self-discovery and understanding of gender and/or identity. The “No More GateKeeping” provider list and app facilitate equitable access to affirming care by streamlining the process for clients seeking affirming assessments and support to access medical care. These resources are instrumental in combating gatekeeping practices and ensuring that individuals receive respectful and affirming care.

4. Creating Safer Spaces: My efforts extend to creating and promoting safe and inclusive environments. Through the development of supportive tools and the facilitation of empathetic training, I strive to ensure that marginalized individuals encounter fewer barriers and receive the validation they deserve. By sharing my experiences and knowledge, I seek to inspire others to engage with their own identities and foster environments that celebrate diversity and resilience.

5. Advocacy and Activism: As an activist and a survivor of anti-trans conversion therapy, I am committed to addressing the historical and ongoing injustices and realities of marginalized communities. My work reflects a dedication to challenging harmful practices and advocating for systemic change by creating new systems and access. By sharing my personal journey and professional insights, I prioritize contributing to a more equitable and just society.

Through these multifaceted efforts, my business plays a crucial role in promoting understanding, support, and justice for historically excluded and marginalized groups. My ultimate goal is to create a more inclusive world where all people can thrive and find their authentic selves.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is centered around providing compassionate, intersectional support and advocacy for marginalized communities, including trans and non binary individuals, LGBQPIA+ folx, and those navigating disability and neurodiversity. What sets me apart is my dedication to integrating an anti-oppressive framework into all aspects of my work, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging and honoring each person’s unique identity and experiences.

I am particularly proud of several key initiatives that have shaped my practice and outreach:

1. No More GateKeeping: This national provider list addresses the critical need for accessible, affirming care. Providers on this list commit to engaging in thorough, supportive assessments and writing letters in a single session, reducing the barriers often faced by those seeking affirming care. We have providers in EVERY US state!

2. Exploring My Identity(ies) (2020): This interactive book offers readers a structured way to explore and affirm their identities while unlearning harmful societal messages. It is designed for both Allies and Community members.

3. Do Something: Trans & Non Binary Identities (2021): This documentary has won over 12 awards at national and international film festivals. It provides a snapshot of the lives of 8 non binary and/or trans individuals, sharing both their challenges and triumphs. The film is a call to action for creating safer, more affirming spaces for our communities. To view the documentary, please email DiversityAndIdentities@gmail.com. The cost for viewing is $25, with a sliding scale available for accessibility, including the option for no cost if needed.

4. Do Something: Identity(ies) Conferences (2022 & 2024):

o The inaugural Do Something: Identity(ies) (DSI) Conference took place on May 13th, 2022 (recordings are available at https://VanEthanLevy.com/conference). This international virtual event centered and celebrated the most erased realities in the LGBTQIAS+ community. Presentations, panels, and education sessions were exclusively led by folx who are trans, non binary, or hold other non cis identities. The conference focused on broadening attendees’ perspectives by highlighting diverse experiences and promoting affirming care. All facilitators were paid for their labor and were part of the community on which they were presenting, reflecting our commitment to creating a conference that mirrors the inclusive world we aspire to.

o The second DSI Conference took place on May 31st, 2024 (recordings are available at https://VanEthanLevy.com/DSi2024/). This event continued our mission to center and celebrate erased realities within the LGBTQPIA2S+ community. We focused on educating the world on affirming care, creating safer spaces, and engaging in restorative and healing justice. The conference featured diverse perspectives from around the globe, emphasizing the need for a truly inclusive approach to education and community support.

Accessibility is a core value in my work. I am committed to offering sliding scale pricing for all my services, including the option for no cost if needed. This approach ensures that financial barriers do not prevent individuals from accessing the support and resources they need. By making these accommodations, I strive to make my work accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation.

The path to establishing my business was far from easy. Early on, I experienced significant challenges, including overcoming the trauma from anti-trans “conversion therapy” and navigating a professional landscape often marred by discrimination and misunderstanding. Additionally, my journey through education was fraught with obstacles, including institutional hostility and microaggressions, which nearly derailed my aspirations.

However, these challenges also became the driving force behind my commitment to advocacy and education. Each setback reinforced my resolve to create spaces where marginalized realities are prioritized and validated. My experiences led to a deeper understanding of the systemic issues at play, which has fueled my passion for reform and education.

One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned is the importance of resilience and adaptability. The barriers I encountered taught me how to navigate adversity while remaining true to my mission. Building a supportive network and continually seeking ways to improve and expand my services have been crucial to overcoming these challenges.

I want the world to know that my work is not just about providing therapy or training but about fostering a culture of respect, understanding, and empowerment for those who are often pushed out or marginalized. My journey has been marked by both profound difficulties and incredible growth, and it is through this journey that I strive to make a meaningful impact. My brand is rooted in authenticity, resilience, and a commitment to creating a more inclusive and supportive world for everyone.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The question of planning a week-long adventure for a best friend is a deeply painful reminder of the realities many of us with disabilities experience. Navigating the world as someone who cannot go indoors or be around others without risking serious health consequences means that such scenarios remain out of reach. The idea of creating an itinerary for activities is not just a matter of preference but a challenging reminder of how erased and excluded disabled individuals often feel. This question highlights the lack of consideration for our experiences and the need for more inclusive perspectives that recognize and address the barriers or our realities. Knowing that these spaces do not yet exist, what I would focus on is the connection with my best friend, and how we can spend time sharing our experiences and realities in ways that are genuine and nurturing to each other in a world that often excludes us.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Firstly, I owe a deep debt of gratitude to Dr. Ghada Osman (she). As a mentor in my field, Dr. Osman has provided invaluable guidance on engaging in accountability, both personally and professionally. Her belief in my work and her teachings on recognizing and addressing gaslighting—whether from others or self-induced—have been crucial in my development. She has supported me in fulfilling my professional hours, continuously encouraged me, and helped me grow as both a compassionate therapist and a better human being. She wrote a phemonal book that has helped me as a therapist and as a human called Mental & Emotional Healing through Yoga: A Guiding Framework for Therapists and their Clients (https://www.GhadaOsman.com)

I also want to acknowledge the incredible support of my parents, Joyfriend, friends and family. They have been a cornerstone of my resilience, helping me navigate the many challenges I face. From holding space for me to share and process the abuse I encounter, to making me food, helping me get groceries, and assisting with medical care, their contributions are immeasurable. Their support through mutual aid and donations, connecting me with essential resources and people, and engaging with my social media have been vital.

I was uncertain if folx wanted to be personally named or not, so I erred on the side of caution and chose not to include names, as I didn’t have time to connect with everyone individually. However, folx know who you are, and your support means the world to me. Even though many may not fully understand the intricacies of what I do, their willingness to support and learn is a testament to their dedication and love.

These individuals and groups have been pivotal in my journey, and their support continues to inspire and sustain me every day.
