We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyson Motsenbocker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyson, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my business on accident. I was asking for more and more time off work to tour and one day I left and never came back. I believe that our occupations have almost nothing to do with status and almost everything to do with time. I started making music full time because it’s what I wanted to do all day, other jobs were simply distracting me and making it more difficult to progress and get better at the things I loved to do. I never really cared about being a musician vocationally, I just wanted to write songs and record them.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My name is Tyson Motsenbocker, I’m a singer songwriter and composer in North County, San Diego. All of the successes I’ve experienced could probably be attributed to two things. First, I am incredibly stubborn, I work and lot and I like working – it means that I have had the opportunity to make lots and lots of bad stuff and some good stuff. Second, some wonderful people have believed in me and given me opportunities to operate just outside my ability, which is where really fast growth happens.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It’s so hard with Covid, but when everything is open again, these are my spots: Buccaneer Cafe in Oceanside (Breakfast) The Alehouse in Encinitas (Beer and Dinner) Ironsmith Coffee in Encinitas (Coffee) Churchhill’s in San Marcos (Beer) Little Joy in Del Mar (Coffee popup) Folk Arts Rare Records in Cherokee Point (Vinyl Records) Underbelly in Little Italy (Ramen) False Idol in Little Italy (Tiki Drinks) Aero Club on India Street for Whiskey and Pinball Starlight on India Street for Cocktails The Belly Up in Solana Beach for shows Casbah for shows I like going down the goat trail at the Glider Port in La Jolla for a weird little hike down the clifff to blacks, Surfing at Pipes in Cardiff is a staple. America’s Finest City.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Everybody on my team – the label at Tooth and Nail, Kevin Castleman, Chris and Jami. The band and so many other people.
