We had the good fortune of connecting with Ty Vaughn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ty, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Since my life is centered around extreme adventure, taking risk is all volunteer. I for one believe in healthy risk taking and unhealthy risk taking. Healthy risk taking is when you purposefully choose to engage in an activity that will leave you saying ” Yes!!! This inherently dangerous adventure was absolutely worth the risk! When I took 35 folks to the Bridge to Nowhere in the San Gabriel mountains to go bungee jumping, well…..actually 13 of them jumped, that was amazing to explore the feeling of freedom and to move without limitations. Most people would never allow themselves to let go on this level. I have always encouraged people to attach a “why” to the experience. So much is going on in our current world that nature and the outdoor climate is providing a wonderful escape/ journey for people to embrace and see that there is more to enjoy than concerts, ball games, and going to the movies. I invite dozens of people every month to go on risky adventures for pleasure and enjoyment. Most of them agree and jump in on the fun because of personal matters that have them stuck and mentally fragile. When we zipline, I tell them to think of something that has you bound, challenged, frustrated, something that has a stronghold on your life and as you stand on this platform preparing to zipline across tell yourself I will no longer accept the current conditions of my life, I will learn to love myself and not become a product of my environment, I have the strength to change the trajectory of my life, Mediocrity will no longer be acceptable. After you have these thoughts in place, zipline across and take in the depth, width and lengths of God’s love and release all of those things into the air, do not land on the next platform holding anymore of the things you cannot change, instead focus on what you can change. Release your mind and experience the freedom that has always been yours. Ziplining has a way of not just being breathtaking, but it’s also a way for you to see the world in a new way. The elements, the air, the landscapes, the lush greenery, and looking over the horizon can definitely be worth the risk and bring healing in a natural way. I believe risks that are worth taking, are the ones that change you and push u and inspire you to become fearless.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The idea of adventure was spun off from me being very engaged in my favorite show “The Amazing Race”! This show inspired me to do something I’d never thought of, didn’t even know existed….Ziplining!! After I experienced this adrenaline fueled free flight of freedom I knew I was hooked. After several of these ziplines local and international I knew there was something more that I needed to do with my life. I met a young lady at the gym who encouraged me to invite others ziplining through social media. I agreed and 3yrs later we now “Adventuress Ty, LLC. We are 4 black women who are thrilled to see others living their best lives through ziplining, kayaking, bungee jumping, skydiving etc…..I actually host and participate in every event. We want to continue to encourage folks to maximize the life and breathe that they have. Life is all about decisions and choices. Why not choose to do things that are thrilling, exciting, adrenaline fueled and blood pumping. We are an adventure family and do things that are a little unorthodox but are unbelievably life changing. We are excited to share that our community of adventurers is dedicated and hungry for more than just a walk in the park, they want to tightrope across the park! I never dreamed that my zipline hobby would turn into an adventure business. It’s a blessing to love what you do and it turns around and rewards you.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since all my friends know I am a thrill seeker, I would say let’s venture over to Catalina Island for a full day of fun. We would take a short helicopter ride over and then walk around to enjoy the scenery and beauty of the Island. Everything is in walking distance so we would get thousands of steps in. After grabbing a bite at one of the stop in restaurants I would quickly divert our attention to the eco zipline tour. Oh this is not optional, it’s necessary. You cannot be with me and not experience stepping off somebody’s cliff. If she’s a little hesitant I’d have a sweet talk her into and then express to her the feeling of accomplishment she would feel upon completion. We would laugh, scream, and talk trash while the thrill of adventure pours through our sweat glands. I’m sure after 5 ziplines overlooking the glistening ocean and steep Canyon she would high five me and Thank me for encouraging this activity. Hopefully she would have a new drive and desire for the adventure life. Not that I’m trying to convert……..well maybe a little bit!😊

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to share my gratitude and appreciation for my adventures crew. Thank you Mika, Ashley and Jerusha for helping to bring this vision to life. They are the backbone to all of these wonderful adventures. We typically move and groove together and inspire our participants to be fearless and enjoy the adventure journey with no expectations. Adventure is not just what we do, it’s who we are!
