We had the good fortune of connecting with Travis Borkenhagen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Travis, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’ve never been much of a risk taker. I supposed that taking risks is somewhat inherent; some people are more inclined and others less. However, in the world of business, risk taking is a necessary factor. For myself, I try to take the necessary risks in the most calculated way possible, in order to mitigate and potential downfall. In life, risks can provide an influx of dopamine, which provides a natural form of excitement. However, it wouldn’t be a risk if the potential for a crash was not evident. Personally, I have worked much too hard to risk any of my accomplishments on taking risks; when not a necessity.

What should our readers know about your business?
My business specializes in event photography, as well as providing lifestyle portraiture to families and those looking to start a family. Our main focus is wedding and corporate event photography. I started focusing on lifestyle photo sessions, as a freelancer and worked my way into the world of wedding photography; which is highly competitive. After achieving a good deal of success in that medium, I found it prudent to expand into the corporate event photography realm; which is less competitive but the expectations are much higher. Somewhere in-between, I branched out into creating an environment where some of the best photographers could obtain employment, through doing what they love; without all of the stressors of building and running a business. I give a lot of credit to our photographers, they are without a doubt some of the very best in the business, within all facets of what it takes to be an excellent event photographer. There were certain pivotal points in the path to where I am today. One of which being the inception of the business, which was by far the most challenging. Building a brand is not for the timid or for anyone that is not ready to dedicate a large portion of their life towards any form of success. The other was the expansion. I would say that these two pivotal moments, within my career have been the moments that I am most proud of. Being able to provide out clients with the very best, in all forms and delivering opportunities for some of the most talented photographers and videographers out there is that most fulfilling form of satisfaction, to me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, I currently reside in Scottsdale Arizona but, previously lived in Southern California. In fact, one of my life long, best friends did come to visit me out in SoCal. We meet up in Huntington Beach over some cocktails and a view of the ocean boardwalk, while Tom Petty played over the restaurants speakers; it was a simple moment but, one that I will remember forever. Eventually, we wound up at one of my all time favorite locations in all of Southern California, in Malibu at Paradise Cove, where there is a restaurant. It can be a bit difficult to find, while driving down the PCH but, when you do, it is a great place to spend the day. Next on my list would be the Promenade on 3rd, in Santa Monica. There is so much to do in the entire area, day or night. Personally, I would skip the Hollywood and Highlight walk of fame and some of the other tourist attractions. It doesn’t hurt to take a hike up to the observatory, either. In Scottsdale Arizona, I would visit the Scottsdale Quarter. Since being built it has been a wonderful place to hangout, shop, eat, and spend some time just relaxing. If you’re looking for a desert scenery with an easy hike, I always recommend McDowell Preserve at Gateway Trailhead, and afterwards a stroll through the near by DC Ranch Market Street.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In a way, my efforts towards achieving some level of success was founded upon wanting to do more for others; either through philanthropy or even just helping others, such as friends and family. My mentorships have come in the form of highly successful individuals, reporting their path towards success within their biographies or books. The support in my life has no doubt come exclusively from my wife and mother. Growing up without a father left a lot of weight on my mother’s shoulders but, she was always there. Later in life, my wife has been a multifaceted source of support in; mental and emotional support, practical support , and an additional source of confidence. I am not sure where I would be without her natural ability to patiently listen to me, to alleviate the everyday pressures and stressors around the house, and by believing in me.
