We had the good fortune of connecting with Tone Troy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tone Troy, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
That most people who are successful in the music industry just “fell out of the sky”. A lot of the names and acts that you are aware of today, have been grinding for years to make it to that point. Sometimes luck plays a small role, but everyone you see is putting in WORK!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am currently doubling as a Dance Music Producer under the name “Tone Troy” and I also work as a fireman in New York City. I have had some releases with labels such as Toolroom, Snatch!, Nervous, Realm, and Brobot to name a few. I’ve been putting more time into the production side of things due to me seeing the glass ceiling of only DJing. I have been really fortunate that much of my music has been supported by bigger named acts in a relatively short amount of time. I owe much of where I am today due to the work ethic I learned from being a fireman. It’s definitely my proudest attribute when it comes to making this artistry a business. Fortunately the work is paying off. I had some recent radio play on Diplo’s Revolution on Sirius XM, as well as some headline bookings in a few different cities as of recently.
It seems like it’s been way longer than it is, but I can honestly say it’s taken about 5 years to get to the point where I am at today. Don’t get me wrong there is SO MUCH more work to do on my end in terms of making more music and better networking, but I definitely need to stop and “smell the roses” every so often and appreciate the process. I’ve done everything from taking DJ gigs for little to no pay, run a residency and slept in my car between shows and working in the firehouse, take online music production courses, and attended countless events just to potentially get a handshake. The constant grind is what got me over the hump. I see what I want, and I want to put all my energy towards that where I can. I might not know all the answers on how to get there at the moment, but I am always looking to find them.
I’m not sure how to clearly define my “brand” in words. Like I said earlier I double as a fireman so this DJ you see is really and truly all aspects of who I am outside of that field. Tone Troy is who I really am. I want to perform to the best of my abilities and make it something you would want to come back to. I make songs that make me happy and in turn, I hope it makes you feel the same way. There’s a lot of “image” that goes hand and hand with this industry but I never want to be a version of myself that isn’t genuine. Every smile in every picture is because I display my best me to anyone who cares to come see it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hmm, it would depend on the city! I am constantly in San Diego when I’m not in New York, so I’d have to say head over to Bang Bang or Spin for some amazing electronic music artists that come through. I’d also say to plan your trip around a FNGRS CRSSD event since those are absolutely amazing.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give my friends Cody, Adam, Jeff, Jorge, Max, Randy and Andreas a shout. They have been coming to my shows for years and without their support and energy, I’m not sure I would have made it this far without their positivity. I’d also like to give Jonpaul a shout, he is the one who kickstarted my career and I am forever grateful for it.
