We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor-Lynne Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Taylor-Lynne, is there something you believe many others might not?
One conventional piece of advice I disagree with as a Registered Nurse and Birth Doula would be that low risk laboring mothers should have their babies on their backs in bed. This notion undermines the natural instincts and needs of the laboring mother, often leading to increased discomfort and prolonged labor. And yet it is the most common position in the hospital setting mothers are asked to get into when it’s time for baby to be born.

When I support this specific group of low risk mothers during birth I love to encourage movement.

Movement during labor can help baby navigate and descend through the birth canal and may shorten labor duration. Positions such as walking, swaying, squatting, or using birthing balls can enhance comfort and efficiency in the birthing process.

Staying mobile can also help reduce pain experienced during surges/contractions. Movement helps manage pain naturally! We have a saying in the birth world ‘motion is lotion’ & it’s true! Changing positions can alleviate pressure points and help distribute labor pain more evenly, reducing the need for medical interventions.

Movement helps improve blood circulation, which ensures that both the mother and the baby receive adequate oxygen, potentially reducing complications.

Different positions can assist in optimal fetal positioning, which is essential for a smoother delivery process.
I am also a Spinning Babies ® Parent Educator & they emphasize the importance of body balancing, utilizing gravity & movement during birth !

I have also found that allowing mom to move throughout her labor helps her feel empowered during her birth process. Allowing the mother to choose her position fosters a sense of control and empowerment, which can be crucial for a positive birthing experience. It supports her intuition about what feels best for her and the baby.

As a birth doula, it is essential to support the mother’s choices and encourage environments that respect her preferences and instincts. By challenging such conventional advice, we can advocate for more personalized and empowering birthing experiences.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Registered Nurse with 5+ years of bedside experience. I am so thankful for my time taking care of patients bedside & for the medical advancement we have today. I truly believe that anyone who goes into the medical profession does so with a full heart hoping to help others. I found during my journey that it was the healthcare system itself that felt off to me. I’ve heard some people refer to it as more of a ‘sick care’ system rather than a health care system and that felt more accurate. I am very passionate about holistic health and preventing illness so acute care wasn’t the best fit for me .
My goal with nursing was always to have a long lasting holistic impact on families and specifically with OB patients. Through some soul searching I found Doula work and it felt like everything fell into place.
Working as a Doula I am able to truly get to know and support so many different beautiful families here in our community. I am able to offer that continuity of care starting early on in pregnancy and lasting through the fourth trimester. I truly feel as though I am able to make a difference through educational loving support for these families during one of the most vulnerable times of their lives. It is truly magic and I am so honored to be apart of each of their stories.
