We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Dunn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylor, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always enjoyed being a “class-clown”. As far back as I can remember, I would do just about anything to make my mom laugh. My first major influence was Jim Carrey. I could recite some of the scenes for “The Mask” and “Ace Ventura” by heart. I was an outcast in most of my elementary and middle school years but once I started high school I discovered the value in making people laugh. I performed in theatre, writing my own comedic monologs but soon after graduating I tried stand-up comedy for the first time, winning a comedy competition in Birmingham, AL. I’ve been hooked ever since. That was almost 10 years ago and since then I married my high school sweetheart, had a beautiful little girl and joined the Navy. I selected orders to San Diego to try and improve as a comedian and after arriving here in September of 2019, I hit the ground running. Started performing anywhere I could and started gaining some traction, then the pandemic started. After two years, I decided to start producing my own show on Coronado and I couldn’t be having more fun doing it. There is no greater feeling than laughing with a group of people and forgetting all of life’s troubles if just for a moment. That’s why I do it.
What should our readers know about your business?
Crown City Comedy is a live stand-up comedy show that I produce, book and host on Coronado. We bring in comedian’s from the local area and Los Angeles, Ranging from open micer’s to nationally touring headliners. This was my first attempt at producing a show and I’ve had the time of my life since the start.
What sets Crown City Comedy apart is my devotion to the comedians, ensuring they’re paid properly for their craft at every show I produce. Every dime of profit I’ve made has gone into making our next show that much better.
It hasn’t been easy, coming out of the pandemic has made it difficult in the sense that some people aren’t quite ready to be in a room full of people. I’ve also had show’s where I had to go into my own pockets in order to make sure everyone gets paid. I want more comedy clubs and local booker’s to conduct themselves the same way. Comedian’s often make little or no money to perform several times a night which often leads why a lot of really funny people give up on there dream. I want to do what i can to change that while providing an awesome experience for my audience.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Definitely have to take them to see the inside of the Hotel Del Coronado. USS MIDWAY Museum
Old Town. The food at El Coyote is sooo good.
My favorite thing to take them to do would be check out the Lamborghini dealership in La Jolla and then immediately go to the La Jolla Comedy Store.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d have to say I’ve had several mentors and people who supported me during my journey. So to name a few;
Jeff Glass- (Wetumpka High School Theatre Teacher, one of the first people that encouraged me to try stand-up)
Penny Rothschild- (Owner of Emerald C Gallery on Coronado, Crown City Comedy’s birthplace)
Jim Carrey and Dave Chappelle-(Two most influential comedians in my opinion, showed me that you should never be afraid to be yourself)
Connie Ward-(Mom and first number one fan)
Lily and Zana Dunn- (Daughter and Wife, obviously my favorite people and reason to continue to work as hard as I do)
