Meet Tartie | Singer/songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tartie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tartie, how do you think about risk?
Being in the music industry means you have to take so many risks. Believing in your abilities, believing in your music and what you have to offer the world amongst a sea of artists is a risk in itself. I think of risk as a necessary ingredient to success. Each time I release a song it’s a risk. I’ve had to make friends with the fears that show up along the way so that I can prove to myself that they don’t need to stop me from doing what I love.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a singer/songwriter who has been writing songs since I was a young girl. I’m so proud that I’m still doing it. To get to where I am today I’ve had to develop a lot of resilience. There can be lots of rejections in this industry but I have learnt to not dwell on these and to instead keep moving forward and writing music even when I don’t necessarily feel like it. These days I am also busy raising two young children (my son is 2 years old and my daughter is 6 months old) yet I still make time for my music. It would’ve been so much easier to give up and stop singing but I’ve realised that it is essential to my wellbeing so therefore I prioritise it. I’ve learnt so many lessons along my musical journey and I’m still learning new things everyday. The main thing I’ve learnt is that my idea of success can evolve along the way. I used to think that you could only be classified a successful musician if you had #1 hits and were touring the world all the time but that isn’t how it has to be these days. Thanks to the internet you can do music from anywhere and you can find a way to do it that suits you and where you are at in your life.
I am most excited at the moment about a collaborative project I’m doing with US artist In These Trees (Binnie Klein.) Binnie and I met online back in 2019 when she played my song “Winter’s Girl” on her radio show on WPKN FM. She asked if I’d write music to one of her poems and from there this project was born. Five single releases later, we are now preparing to release a full album of our songs together. ‘The Quiver’ will be released in early 2024 and it’s a piece of work I’m so proud of. The songs explore struggles, heartbreak, excitement, confusion, and liberation as well as the devastating effects of climate change on the environment.
It’s been amazing working with Binnie, as well as the incredible David Baron who has produced the album for us.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Melbourne, Australia which is a very cool and happening city. It has so many places to go and eat and drink at that I could never recommend just one! If my best friend was visiting the area I would take them to dinner somewhere on Swan Street in Richmond, followed by a concert at Sidney Myer Music Bowl. If it’s Summer, the Queen Victoria night markets are awesome. Also, I’d definitely do a day trip down the coast with a big drive along the Great Ocean Road which is one of the world’s most picturesque places.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people that deserve credit and recognition in my story that I couldn’t just name one. I’d say my family is a huge support who have ridden the highs and lows of my music career with me. The managers I’ve had along the way who have believed in my music when I haven’t. Also to the fans who write to me to tell me how much they appreciate my music. They have all encouraged me to keep going even when it feels like no one is listening.
