We had the good fortune of connecting with Tammy Kokjohn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tammy, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
My goal of becoming a Wildlife and nature photographer was to bring awareness to children. It’s not just about photographing an image of a mammal or bird posing, or simply sitting on a branch. But to be able to capture moments of behavior, really showcasing the personalities of your subjects. To me, this draws out emotions in sharing those pictures, and affects how you perceive wildlife. And while we can never predict those moments in nature, much patience and perseverance will sometimes reap rewards.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
With Social media platforms, being a Wildlife photographer seems to be way more common these days. But for me, I try really hard when I’m out in the field to bring different perspectives of my subjects. There’s definitely been learning curves of knowing the correct settings on the camera based on lighting and other factors. But I’ve always found it rewarding and enjoyable when being able to capture the moment. It’s been several years of working at perfecting my abilities, with always much more to learn, but I love every minute of being out in nature and trying.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Most of my favorite places to take friends have to do with wildlife and nature in our area. So many beautiful places, in no particular order, La Jolla Cove, hiking at Torrey Pines, a leisurely walk along the San Diego river channel to observe the birds. Always a day at one of the local beaches, a favorite is La Jolla Shores or Moonlight beach. A fun hike is Annie’s Canyon, and Lake Hodges. The natural beauty of the area is so fun to be able to share with friends.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to say, one person deserves much credit for me becoming a wildlife photographer. And that would be my dear friend Michele, of close to 40 years. We met through our young sons who were in elementary school together. To bring awareness to my grandchildren, and all children about wildlife and conservation, forever bonds our friendship.
