We had the good fortune of connecting with Taciana Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taciana, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have been a photographer for many years, I started with landscapes then learned portraiture. I started my photography business, TNT Captures, in 2013. That same year we went to Iceland. While there my love of landscape photography was reignited. I also wanted to tell every person I knew about how great that trip was. I decided that I should share my travel photos and stories with more people so in 2018 I decided to start a travel blog, Life Beyond Zebra. So many people were surprised that we could afford to travel so much but we are just average people, I wanted to show others that anyone can travel if they really want to.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My blog is driven by my photography. I strive to take more than a snapshot when traveling. I want to capture a moment in time and tell the story of the location. I want to be able to be taken back to that place at any given time just by looking at it. I print my images on the highest quality papers and materials so that they are worthy of a gallery. Success has been slow moving but in the right direction. It hasn’t been as easy as I thought it would be but it’s such a passion that the work hardly feels like “work”. The biggest lesson I have learned is that if it feels like an uphill battle then maybe change course, often there is another path that leads to where you want to go that is not as tough. My ultimate goal is to share my stories with others in hopes that it can inspire them to pursue their endeavors.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh man, where do I begin? I live in sunny San Diego, there is so much to do and see here! One day would have to be spent at La Jolla cove. The water is beautiful, the sea lions bask in the sun on the cliffs and there is plenty to see in town too. Tones to eat and tasty gelato. There is even a neat cave tour that takes you right to the waters edge, so cool! Another day would be spent at Balboa Park, there is tons of Museums and the Zoo too! Just up the street from the part is one of my favorite neighborhoods for dining. Dinner at Muzitas for some tasty Ethiopian food then some amazing ice cream at Stella Jeans.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When I decided to start my travel blog I had little idea what to do other than write posts. I knew if I wanted it to be more that I needed some help. I took a chance on the Travel Blog Blast Off program from It’s a Lovely Life. Which I later found out were a local family traveling the world just like I wanted to. Thanks to them I was able to get my blog off the ground and start making connections. I also found a blog called Full Suitcase who really was a model for how I wanted my blog to go. These two were pivotal in the success of the blog.
