We had the good fortune of connecting with Suzanne Maslyk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Suzanne, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking a risk is an opportunity to open another door to the future. Every job I had or had to leave was another experience to add on my list. I’ve had jobs that were easy and paid poorly, and harder ones showed me income potential. Never say you can’t do something that you want to do-my risks were always worth it even if I wasn’t sure what I was doing at first. My entire resume is a series of risks which gave me exposure. I’ve done rough electrical work, sold vacuums, been a barista, sold insurance and managed a bakery as baker and cake decorator.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
After I dropped out of interior design school due to addiction I felt like a failure. After recovery, I started a family and worked 12 years in a toxic work environment. It paid well and had a pension but depression set in to the point of hopelessness. I took time off, got the mental help I needed which included returning to art. It was really hard to leave behind all that time I invested and financial security. But the flip side is I’m excited to wake up each day! My family comes first and I know that God will provide for us. I believe in second chances, hence the work I do. God never gives up on us, His grace is sufficient. The string art I make features a sun: reminding me of hope for a new day.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Vamos a Texacoco in Vista has the most authentic lamb tacos with handmade tortillas(heaven!) I’d hit up old town Temecula for the weekend for some Vegas like action. The Temecula wineries have great views as well. I like the vibes at Crusin’ Grand in Escondido for Friday night car shows and kettle corn. Friedas taco stand in Esco is also a must! Pala has a great patio for chillin watching the sunset after their yummy pad thai.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m dedicating my story to my savior Jesus Christ, my parents, and Brittany Flores. For over 17 years Brittany has been with me through my addiction and my recovery. Even when i was at my worst she was the one who accepted me. Through the years I’ve done what I had to do for income but my dreams were on hold. Brittany asked me the hard questions I hadn’t thought to ask myself. She challenged me to expand my potential and dream bigger. Brittany is the best kinda friend a person could hope for.
