We had the good fortune of connecting with Suresh Ramaswamy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Suresh, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” — Howard Thurman. As a transformational teacher and life coach, I often come across people who feel frustrated in their current job or profession. These individuals are exceptionally skilled and are stars in their careers. From the outside, they are success stories. However, inwardly, these individuals feel increasingly uninspired and tired. They have a song in them they are unable to sing. They tend to rationalize continuing down the same path. But in the end, they have to find a way to explore and express their soul interests. I love Howard’s quote; he is pointing at the same thing. We have to ask ourselves: “Is what I am doing making me come alive?” When we do what makes us come alive, we find deep fulfillment because we align ourselves with our higher purpose. That is also when we contribute to the collective in a beautiful and inspired way.
Let’s talk shop. Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My calling has been to help individuals transform and reach their highest potential. I especially delight in working with those who wish to explore higher consciousness because the ultimate answers to our existence are found there. Even from my early teens, my interest has been very much about actualizing the highest potentials available to man. I found much inspiration in the writings of sages and mystics. I was also fully engaged with life–school, sports, work, family. Those aspects of life are not a distraction. In fact, they offer us umpteen opportunities to grow in a balanced and integrated way. My corporate and entrepreneurial ventures were enriching and satisfying. They helped me overcome fears and understand the dynamics of human relationships at a more profound level. My experiences led to my becoming a transformational teacher. I teach a course called Transform Your Life at the local college here in San Diego. I also wrote Just Be: Transform Your Life and Live as Infinity, wherein I articulate many insights and practices to help everyone discover their own highest truth.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would start with my fave beach: Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. This part of San Diego has a sublime, ethereal vibe that is soothing for the soul. Minutes away are Swami’s Beach and the meditation gardens, which further enhance the heaven on earth feeling. Next, I would take my visiting friend to La Jolla Coves so we can hang out with the marine life that is so accessible there. A harbor cruise provides a lovely feel for San Diego Bay; on the cruise we would enjoy Coronado and downtown San Diego’s views. Cabrillo National Monument at the southern tip of the Point Loma peninsula offers some stunning views as well. I am sure my friend would enjoy joyful sightings of dolphins and whales so we would do a whale-watching tour from Oceanside. Long walks on the beach are not to be missed. My friend and I would start on Ponto Beach and walk to Oceanside Pier if the tides are low. Then we’d grab some pizza and tea because we will likely be famished after this extended walk. I would recommend some fantastic local hikes to my visiting friend: Lake Calavera, Los Penasquitos, Elfin Forest, Torrey Pines State Park. And of course, I would make sure my friend visited Balboa Park and Sea World while they are here. For some authentic South Indian food, I would take them to San Idli in the Miramar area.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to wisdom teachers of all traditions, sages, mystics, mentors, guides, who have, over the ages, pointed the way to something deeper and truer. That there is much more to us than meets the eye. That life can be incredibly beautiful. That we are infinite beings.
