We had the good fortune of connecting with Steve Mike and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steve, how do you define success?
Success is continually improving your craft year-over-year, finding energy in connections with other like-minded people you meet along the way, and building a community around those people and your mutually creative ideals. Paying attention to the details and trying things different when they don’t work but always keeping your head down while appreciating the progress that you have made.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We’re all music nerds so we get excited about all sorts of things whether it’s a cool guitar riff, interesting chord progression, or clever lyric. Perseverance is very important. It’s great to have goals but I’ve seen a lot of bands just not have any intention to connect with the community and flame out because they thought they could cut it on talent alone which isn’t typically the case. Not only is that connection important for success but, if all you are so self absorbed that you don’t recognize the value of community, go do something else. We don’t want you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hot spots include Besta-Wan in Cardiff, Grandview Beach, Clem’s in Kensington Height, Point Loma tide pools, Tower Bar for a punk show, and a day-trip to Tijuana.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I personally owe everything to my mom who had a musical background and got me into playing piano at a young age which began my 30+ year musical evolution so shout out to her. For our band, definitely a shout out to a few things: 1) Our original bass player, Brian Wilder. He had been in the San Diego music scene for awhile so he was integral in connecting us with some really awesome people that we have the pleasure of playing and hanging with to this day. 2) Tower Bar, the best dive, punk bar you will ever go to. It’s a place that everyone needs to go to at least once and, if you are cool, you will most likely want to go back. Amazing community built around that building, may it live forever. 3) Craigslist. It built our band. It’s weird meeting strangers on the Internet but hey, sometimes it works out and you don’t end up in someone’s trunk.
